Getting Started with Bloomberg

Getting Started with Bloomberg

Begin searches :
1) by choosing one of the Yellow market sector keys and then making menu choices according to preferences for that market sector Example: Equity <GO> Then #1 - Finding a Security Then TK - Ticker Symbol Lookup
2) by typing a term or company name etc. followed by the green HELP key.
Example:
BETA HELP
HELP HELP Hitting the HELP key twice activates the e-mail screen with which you can send questions to Bloomberg. Responses can be retrieved by pressing the MESSAGE button on the Numbers keypad. Occassionally Bloomberg will reply by phone (give your cell phone number in the e-mail message or the call will come to Bus Lib staff phone)

Unless you opt to use the HELP key, all search syntax in all Market Sectors follow this pattern:
Once you have determined that you have the appropriate company, index, currency, bond code etc. use the CODE followed by the Yellow Market Sector Key followed by the Green <GO>
e.g. SLF CN Equity <GO>
Translation: SLF is the ticker symbol for Sun Life Financial CN is the Stock Exchange (Canadian) upon which it trades and then the yellow Equity key indicates that this is an Equity search

e.g. CAN CRNCY <GO>
Translation: CAN is the symbol for Canadian Dollar and CRNCY is the Market Sector key related to currency information
How to determine the appropriate code. Each Market Sector provides a search mechanism for finding the equity, bond, currency etc. CODE required. The TK symbol is most commonly used key for finding codes - as is FAS. After selecting one of the Yellow market sector keys, Choose #1 of the menu choices and using the TK or FAS or similar codes, search for the appropriate CODE. Please note: for Equity searches the company code PLUS the stock exchange must be noted.

Many commands can be used in most of the Market Sector categories:

DES - Description
CACS - Corporate Action Calendar
HP - Historical Information in table format
GP - Historical Information in graph format
