Searching for EBL e-books in the Catalogue:
Users can find Canadian Electronic Library e-books through the
library catalogue and conducting a
Title search for "Canadian Electronic Library" and also limiting to
Electronic Resouces. You can also find a list of all the e-books available in Western Libraries by conducting a
Subject search in the catalogue for "ebook".
Before Viewing/Reading an e-Book:
With Canadian Electronic Library, you must have the eBrary Reader plugin installed (click link to download) on your browser. It is highly suggested that you use Internet Explorer.
Gaining Access:
If you click on the first link (as noted in the picture above), you will see all of the Canadian Electronic Library e-books that Western Libraries subscribes to (3694 to be exact). Next, click on any of the titles of intererest and then click on "Connect to Internet Resource". You will then be directed to Canadian Electronic Library's site with the eBrary Reader plugin loading the e-book.
To begin reading the e-book, simply click on the + symbols beneath the Table of Contents.
Features of Interest:
Canadian Electronic Library allows you to right click on any word and:
- Retrieve a definition of it from Marriam Webster's dictionary (right click Define)
- Location any area or place mentioned with MapQuest, National Geographic or Yahoo! (right click Locate)
- Translate the text into 10+ languages (right click Translate)
- Search the document or page for specific terms (right click Search Document OR right click Search All Documents)
- Search the Internet via Google, Yahoo!, AltaVista or Excite for specific terms (right click Search Web)
- Search the Western Libraries catalogue by Keyword, Title, Author or Subject (right click Search Catalogue)
Notes:
Canadian Electronic Library also gives you a Notes feature. To use the notes feature, please click the Notes tab on the beside the Table of Contents.
You will then be asked to either Sign In or Create a New Account. If you click Create New Account and enter your details. Once you have done this, you will be automatically signed in.
Whenever you create a Note for a specific book, it will automatically be added to your Personal Bookshelf.
Highlighting:
When reading an e-book you can also highlight text as you would do with a print copy. To do so, left click and drag your mouse over any text you want highlighted. When you are finished, simply remove your finger from the left click button on the mouse and click Highlight and choose which colour you would like.
Bookshelf:
Whenever you are in an e-book you would like to refer to in the future, you can save it to your own personal bookshelf provided to you by eBrary Reader. To do so, simply right click anywhere on the page and click "Add to Bookshelf".
Once you have added a book to your shelf, you can click the Bookshelf tab on the left hand side of the page. All of the books you have added will be placed on your shelf.
