Datastream provides daily pricing and volume information on over 37,000 equities from 57 countries, 12,000 market stock and bond indices, 87,000 macroeconomic series from the International Financial Statistics of the World Bank, OECD and other central statistical offices, over 2,000 daily foreign exchange rates, 1,000 daily and weekly interest rate series, 68,000 fixed income instruments from 23 countries and more than 260 financial and commodity futures and options contracts. More About Datastream (coverage dates, geographic coverage, data sources) For other helpful guides see: Princeton University, Univ. of California (Berkeley), Univ. of British Columbia, Univ. of Pennsylvania,Duke University

Accessing Data Datastream uses codes to identify the many instruments (i.e. companies, bonds, interest rates, etc.) and datatypes (i.e. opening price, dividened yield, etc.) used by its programs to produce reports or charts. Two methods of determining instrument codes and datatype codes are outlined below.  An instrument code used alone returns a default datatype code.  The following defaults apply:
        Equities = adjusted closing middle price
        Bonds = market price
        Industry Group = price index
        Exchange Rates = closing middle rate
        Any other series = series value Code Lookup   Method 1 Enter the bolded text (below) next to the "Program Number" on the main screen and press <enter>.  Follow the instructions on the screens until the required code appears.  Record the code for use later in Datastream programs.

  Method 2

With this method you can search for instrument and datatype codes and paste the code into fields in Datastream programs.
This method can be used from any point within Datastream programs. Click on the "Code" button in the top menu bar or hit F9. A window titled "Datastream Codes - Datatypes" will appear.  Click on the down arrow at the end of the bar window displaying "Datatypes".  Scroll through the list of datatypes that appear in the popup window and click on the datatype you wish to search.  A new popup window will appear.  If you have chosen equities as the datatype for example, the window will be titled "Datastream Codes - Equities". Use the Find box to search for the instrument you wish to research and highlight the appropriate line. If you wish to use the default datatype for the instrument you have selected, double click on the line and the code will be passed back to the original screen. If you wish to use a datatype other than the default for the instrument, type "control D".  A new popup window will appear.  Once again if you are working with equities the window will be titled "Datastream Codes -Equities(Datatypes)". Browse through the list of choices or use the Find box to locate the correct datatype.  Double click on the desired code and the combination of instrument and datatype codes will be passed back to the original screen. Running Datastream Running Datastream is a two step process.  On one screen you select the program you wish to run and on a second screen you specify the data you wish to use. Program selection is made on the main Datastream screen. The main screen  is divided into three basic sections: Type of Request (upper left window), Type of Data (upper right window), Programs Available (Bottom window).   Choose one criterion from each of the three windows. First choose the type of request (ex. reports, time series, or graphs), then the type of data (ex. equities, indices, exchange rates, or economics), and finally the programs available. When choosing an option from the "Programs Available" window, double click on the item. A search string (ex. 301D) will appear next to "Program Number" at the top of the screen, and then a data selection window will appear. Data selection windows vary for each Datastream program.  See the examples below in this guide. Downloading Finally, be sure to read the section on exporting from datastream. Essentially, dowloading data from this program takes the form of a data capture. That requires that you turn the capture on before initiating their search. Once the search is completed, and the user has scrolled through the results screens, the capture feature has to be turned off.

EQUITIES

.
NOTE: Generally the codes for companies include the company ticker symbols. For Canadian equities, precede the ticker symbol with C: to indicate the equity is listed on a Canadian exchange. (ex. C:AC or C:NT) For USA use U:. (ex. U:MMM or U:IBM) NOTE: The default datatype for equities is closing prices. (ie. If no datatype code is included in the search, closing prices will be retrieved.) Search Example:
  •
      - At "Program Window" type CODE.

      - Type Air Canada. Press <enter>. - From the list retrieved, you'll notice the stock listed on the Canadian exchange has ticker AC. The search code is C:AC.

Exporting from Datastream

To print search results on Datastream click on the printer icon at the top of the screen. The system will print the data currently displayed on the screen. Press <enter> to retrieve more data and click on the printer icon to make a copy. Downloading from Datastream takes the form of a screen capture or dump. Users have to turn on the capture before initiating their search. Once the search results appear on the screen, press <enter> to scroll through the data. This prompts the system to capture all of the data to a file. Remember that any search on Datastream begins with a search for the Datastream Code/Mnemonic. Users can complete that part of their search before activating the capture function. There are two methods of downloading: Capturing Plain Text and Exporting for Spreadsheets. Both are outlined below. Please read through all of the instructions before attempting to export. Downloading Text:
