Searching for Canadian Sources

The best area in which to search for information on Canadian topics (news) is in the GUIDED NEWS SEARCH segment of LexisNexis Academic. Below you will find specific information on how to access Canadian sources. For quick reference, the Business Library staff have created a list of Canadian titles which appear in LexisNexis Academic

Articles - Search Strategy:

From the main search screen click on NEWS - then on the GUIDED NEWS SEARCH tab.

Under Step One: Select a News Category, click on the drop down menu and choose World News

Under Step 2: Select a News Source , click on North/South America News Sources
There are more than 100 Canadian publications grouped under this category which are then searched when terms are placed in the Search fields provided.

If you wish to search specific Canadian titles (e.g. Canadian Speeches), click on Source List to the right of the Step 2 search field. Click in boxes to add all titles you wish to include in the search. After all selections have been made click on Paste to Search at the top of the page. You will be returned to the Guided Search page and you will see all titles chosen listed in Step 5 Search this publication title(s)

Company Lists - Search Strategies

Click on Business in left column
Then on Company Profile listed under Company Information in right hand column
Leave all fields blank and proceed to the Narrow Search With Additional Terms field to do the field searching which suits your research needs. Insert search parameters as required.
e.g. country(canada) and province(ontario) and sic(2934) and employees(>10 and <100)

Title Oddities in LexisNexis Academic

In the entire list of other category/source combinations in Guided News Search only five Canadian sources
are not in World News/North South America:

The Toronto Sun: is in General News/Major Papers
or Arts & Sports News/Sports News or Today's News.

Two years of The Canadian Home Economics Journal is in Business News/Industry.

Canadian Corporate News is in Business News/Business and Finance.

Transcripts for the CBC's Fifth Estate are in News Transcripts/All Transcripts.

There are two supplements to the Canadian Mining Journal in Business News/Industry.
