4. I found an article in a database - How do I get it online?
How do I get an article I found in a database / online index / article index?

If you are currently in the database/article index:

  • Many databases have a 'Get it @ Western' link. Click on this link and if Western Libraries has electronic access, you will be able to connect to the journal from the catalogue record.
  • In some databases, you will see direct link to the “full text” electronic format of the article from the database. Click on this link to view the full text of the article
  • If neither link is available in the database you are searching, you will need to search the Shared Library Catalogue. Search for the Title of the journal and select Journals from the Location drop-down menu.

If you have the citation to the article but are not in a database, you can use our Citation Linker service to see if we have the article online or in print.

  • Start at the Western Libraries home page.

Note: If you are off-campus, click on 'Off-Campus Access' and enter your UWO Personal Computer Account username and password. If you do not know your UWO Personal Computer Account login information, go to the Information Technology Services (ITS) website.
  • Click on 'Library Catalogue'.
  • Click on ‘Go to E-Journals List’.
  • Click on the ‘Citation Linker’ tab and enter as much of the citation information as you know into the online form, (eg. Journal Title, Volume number, Issue number, Start page...) and then click on Go!.
  • The resulting screen will show you if your article is available online – click on Go! to access it.
  • If there is no link to the online article, click on Go! beside ‘Check UWO Shared Catalogue’ to see if we have the article in print.

5. Can I search for articles in several electronic journals at the same time?

  • Yes. Western Libraries subscribes to many full-text collections of journals that can be searched. Some examples include: ScholarsPortal, HeinONLine, JSTOR, ProjectMuse, LexisNexis, PsycARTICLES and the Sage Full-Text Collections. You can access them from our Library homepage by clicking on ‘Databases by Title’ or ‘Resources by Subject.’
  • Some databases have a feature where you can limit your search to find only articles available online. Each database is different so check their Help menus.

Note that by limiting your results to journals available only online in full-text, you may be eliminating important sources that are available only in print.
