Canadian Newspapers - A Thing of the Past?

Many small and large Canadian newspapers are slowly disappearing from print and electronic view. Some reasons behind their departure include: the Recession, changing reading habits of generations, and provider access (i.e. ProQuest, LexisNexis or others dropping them or being forced to drop them from their subscriptions by publishers).
A prime example of this is The London Free Press, which is owned by Quebecor Media (the parent company of Sun Media). Western Libraries no longer has full-text access to the paper electronically beyond a 3 month rolling backfile from Factiva. Paper and microfilm copies are still collected, but due to publisher restrictions, The London Free Press is no longer available through ProQuest or LexisNexis.
Listed on this page are 24 Canadian newspapers. They are presented in alphabetical order by the city in which they are published. The purpose of the list is to show the electronic holdings for each newspaper and to indicate which database provides them and for what period of time. Western Libraries may also have print and microfilm copies of these newspapers and we encourage you to use the catalogue to determine the extent of our complete holdings. In addition we provide, for your convenience the web site for each paper as of the Fall of 2011.
