  • The Excerpta Medica database (EMBASE) provides access to information on medical and drug-related subjects. It contains citations and abstracts from over 5000 biomedical journals from 70 countries.
  • Provides access to three multidisciplinary databases of bibliographic information indexed so that you can search for specific articles by subject, author, journal, and/or author address. Each Web of Science database includes the article's cited reference list (often called its bibliography). This unique feature allows searching for articles that cite a known author or work.
  • The Cochrane Library is a collection of databases - including the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and others - that contain high-quality information regarding the effects of various interventions in health care.  Link to the Wiley Online Library here.

  • Scopus is an abstracts database covering articles from peer-reviewed titles, including international publishers. Subject coverage includes: Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Engineering; Life and Health Sciences; Social Sciences, Psychology and Economics; Biological, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; and General Sciences.
  • BioMed Central is an STM (Science, Technology, Medicine) publisher which has pioneered the open access publishing model.  All original research articles published by BioMed Central are freely and permanently acessible online imediately upon publication.  BioMed Central's portfolio includes over 200 peer reviewed journals.

Clinical Tools

  • DynaMed is an evidence-based, clinical reference tool created by physicians for physicians and other health care professionals for use primarily at the 'point-of-care.' DynaMed contains AHFS drug information, article references, medical calculators, patient information, and thousands of topics organized into clinical summaries. Content in DynaMed is updated daily.   • The American College of Physicians' Physicians' Information and Education Resource offers a Web-based evidence-based clinical guidance designed for rapid access to clinical information at the point of care by physicians and other health care providers.
  • AccessMedicine is an innovative online resource that provides students, residents, clinicians, researchers, and all health professionals with access to more than 60 medical titles from the best minds in medicine, updated content, thousands of images and illustrations, interactive self-assessment, case files, diagnostic tools and a comprehensive search platform.
  • Essential Evidence Plus is a tool that makes it possible to search a number of medical information resources and decision support calculators simultaneously. The resources include the Cochrane database of systematic reviews, clinical practice guidelines, patient education handouts and summaries - called POEMs (Patient Oriented Evidence that Matters) - on various medical topics. Western libraries' subscription to this resource includes a free download of the PDA version.   • Produced by the Canadian Pharmacists Association, the online Compendium of Pharmaceuticals and Specialties (e-CPS) provides health care professionals with web access to the most current Canadian drug information.
  • UpToDate is an information resource for health professionals designed to answer clinical questions by summarizing published evidence and making specific recommendations for patient care.
  • The TRIP Database is free unified search tool of evidence-based sites such as ACP Journal Club, Bandolier, Cochrane, DARE, Health Technology Assessment, and the National Guideline Clearing House. TRIP is produced by the Centre for Research Support in the UK.

E-books

Images are available for downloading and educational use.
  • Search video and audio content on AccessMedicine. Organized by system: cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, muskuloskeletal, neurologic, reproductive and respiratory. Also includes Grand Rounds Lectures: a series of multimedia lectures on key medical topics in internal medicine and pharmacology.
  • This collection of over 1000 talks (with new content being added all the time) contains animated audio visual presentations with narration by world leading scientists, researchers and clinicians.
  • This site provides access to prerecorded webcasts of surgical procedures performed in various medical centres in the United States. The videos last for an hour. You need RealPlayer (http://www.real.com) installed on your computer to be able to play the videos.
  • OpenAnesthesia.org is a Wiki developed by anesthesiologists at the University of Virginia with the goal of collecting and distributing evidence-based information regarding all aspects of anesthesia. OpenAnesthesia also have a podcast that you can subscribe to on iTunes.
  • a community forum for anesthesia, critical care, and pain medicine practitioners. This open community for questions and answers related to anesthesia, critical care or pain management represents a new model in medical publishing. Contributors develop a "reputation score" based on votes from other users; the score gives a rough indicator of how well trusted the contributor is within the community.
