WHAT IS PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT?
"Daily, year-round continuing appraisal, coaching, and feedback that involves helping employees understand the nature and quality of their performance, identify what they need to do to improve, and motivate them to do it. That is, performance management employs strategies designed to foster employee personal responsibility, self-discipline, and individual decision making, rather than traditional punishment, to maintain employee self-esteem and encourage loyalty and commitment" (Tracey, William R. The Human Resources Glossary: The Complete Desk Reference for HR Executives, Managers and Practitioners (2nd Ed.), p. 392).
WHAT IS A PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL?
"Systematic, periodic review and analysis of employees' performance with the objective of improving that performance so that employees can realize their full potential. Ideally it measures how well people do the job as compared with a set of performance standards, communicates that information to them, gets an agreement on strengths and deficiencies, and results in a plan of action to enhance strengths and shore up weaknesses" (Tracey, William R. The Human Resources Glossary: The Complete Desk Reference for HR Executives, Managers and Practitioners (2nd Ed.), p. 391).
