Databases

  • EI Compendex is one of the most comprehensive engineering literature databases.

It contains over ten million references and abstracts taken from over 6,000 scholarly journals, trade magazines, conference proceedings and technical reports. Online coverage is from 1884 to the present. Approximately 650,000 new records are added to the database annually from over 190 disciplines and major specialties within engineering. It is updated weekly.

You can create your Personal Account in Compendex to save searches, save records, or create Email Alerts. If you use RefWorks to manage citations, please refer to the instruction for importing references from Compendex into RefWorks.

  • SciFinder is a key database for chemistry, chemical and biochemical engineering, environmental sciences, materials science, and geochemistry. Its coverage includes journal articles, conference papers and patents from many patent issuing organizations. You can search by research topic, chemical substance, structure and substructure.

Individual users must register for an account. Registration is a two-part process and must be completed from within the University's IP range. We recommend that you don't use your Western Identity username and password when registering for a SciFinder web account. • Provides subject, title, and author access to almost all American and some Canadian (including University of Western Ontario) dissertations accepted at an accredited institution since 1861. Masters theses have been selectively indexed since 1962.
  • Proquest Trade & Industry covers major trade and industry news. With ABI/INFORM Trade & Industry, users can study and compare specific trades and industries, including petroleum, petrochemicals, and pharmaceuticals. Tips for searching: Search using classification codes to limit results to specific industries (eg. 8640 Chemical industry) or by geographic area codes to limit results to certain locales (eg. 9172 Canada).
  • The CCOHS (Canadian Centre for Occupational Health & Safety) Academic Support Program provides tools to educate students about environmental and occupational health and safety. This program includes MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) as well as various databases to find articles on chemical safety.
  • Multiple databases from ProQuest provide subject, title, and author access to dissertations accepted at an accredited institution since 1861. Masters theses have been selectively indexed since 1962. You can access full-text documents for many  dissertations and theses.
  • BIOSIS Previews is a comprehensive index of life sciences and biomedical research worldwide including: journals, meetings, patents, and books. Biological Abstracts and Biological Abstracts/RRM (reports, reviews & meetings) comprise BIOSIS Previews.
  • OnePetro.org is a multi-society library that provides a simple way to search for and access a broad range of technical literature related to the oil and gas exploration and production industry. From one place, you can search documents from many different professional societies, or similar organizations, that serve the oil and gas industry. Launched in March 2007, OnePetro currently contains more than 130,000 documents, with more being added frequently. The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is operating OnePetro on behalf of the participating organizations.
