Databases

  • SciFinder is a key database for chemistry, chemical and biochemical engineering, environmental sciences, materials science, and geochemistry. Its coverage includes journal articles, conference papers and patents from many patent issuing organizations. You can search by research topic, chemical substance, structure and substructure.

Individual users must register for an account. Registration is a two-part process and must be completed from within the Unviersity's IP range. We recommend that you don't use your Western Identity username and password when registering for a SciFinder web account.

Register Now for your own SciFinder Web account - Restricted to UWO faculty, staff, and students. Please be aware that your SciFinder account is for your own use only, must not be shared with anyone, and must not be used for any commercial research.

    Features

  • Reaxys is a workflow solution for accessing the combined wealth of trustworthy, experimental substance and reaction data and bibliographical data housed in Beilstein, Gmelin and Patent Chemistry Databases.

    Features:
    - selected over 400 core org/inorg/organometal journals (1771 - )
    - selected organic chemistry patent publications (1869 - 1980), and selected English-language patent publications (WO, US, EP; 1976 -) including IPC's: A01N Biocides, Agrochemicals; C09B Dyes; C07 Organic Chemistry; A61K Medicinal Preparations
    - additional content from books, conference proceedings, reviews, etc.
    - web-based application
    - no user limits on access

  • Explore the database with multidisciplinary coverage of over 10,000 high-impact journals in the sciences, social sciences, and arts and humanities, as well as international proceedings coverage for over 120,000 conferences.

  • Scopus is a large abstract and citation database of research literature and quality web sources. Updated daily, Scopus covers 29 million abstracts of over 15,000 peer-reviewed titles from more than 4,000 publishers, 265 million references and 265 million quality web pages through Scirus' web search to cover the scientific web.

  • The CCOHS (Canadian Centre for Occupational Health & Safety) Academic Support Program provides tools to educate students about environmental and occupational health and safety. This program includes MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) as well as various databases to find articles on chemical safety.
  • Multiple databases from ProQuest provide subject, title, and author access to dissertations accepted at an accredited institution since 1861. Masters theses have been selectively indexed since 1962. You can access full-text documents for many  dissertations and theses.

Handbooks

  • This handbook provides chemical and physical property information for a wide range of common chemical substances.
  • This book serves as a reference for engineers, scientists, and students concerned with the use of materials in applications, including coverage of: corrosion rates of steel in major river systems and atmospheric corrosion rates, the corrosion behavior of materials such as weathering steels and newer stainless alloys, and the corrosion behavior and engineering approaches to corrosion control for nonmetallic materials.

  • This handbook covers green engineering, process safety, utilization of renewable resources, fossil fuels, nuclear power, and many of the major individual components of industrial chemistry.

  • The online version provides ready access to syntheses, patents, and applications for more than 2400 active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). It is contantly updated and structure searchable.

  • This classic reference covers the entire field of chemistry with facts, figures, values, tables, and formulas.
  • Contains: *The Handbook of Chemistry and Physics(latest edition) * Polymers: A Property Database * The Combined Chemical Dictionary * The Dictionary of Commonly Cited Compounds * Properties of Organic Compounds * Dictionary of Inorganic & Organometallic Compounds * Dictionary of Natural Products * Dictionary of Organic Compounds * Dictionary of Drugs
  • Beilstein provides property and spectral data for organic substances, while Gmelin provides property and spectral data for inorganic and organometallic substances. Reaxys is the search platform for both handbooks.
  • "The Merck Index is an encyclopedia of chemicals, drugs, and biologicals that contains more than 10,000 monographs. Each monograph in this authoritative reference source is a concise description of a single substance or a small group of closely related compounds."

Patents

  • Reaxys is a workflow solution for accessing the combined wealth of trustworthy, experimental substance and reaction data and bibliographical data housed in Beilstien, Gmelin and Patent Chemistry Databases.
  • This database provides global coverage of patents. The database is organized by patent family or equivalents and full text is available for most patents. A detailed description of the patent coverage is given here.

  • SciFinder Scholar covers more than 50 patent issuing countries, with patent records from the key patent office available online within two days of patent's issuance. You can limit your search in SciFinder Scholar to patents by refiining or filtering by document type, patents.
  • This database provides you with access to over 75 years of patent descriptions and images.
  • USPTO provides access to full text patents since 1976 as well as full page images since 1790 as well as applications published since March 15, 2001. Full text files are in TIFF format and require a special plug-in for viewing.
  • This database contains U.S. patents from 1971 forward, searchable by keyword, patent number, classification number, lawyer, assignee, inventor, or summary.

Web Sites

  • Search for data on specific compounds based on name, chemical formula, CAS registry number, molecular weight, ionization energy or proton affinity. Includes thermochemical data, IR spectra, mass spectra and ion energetics data for thousands of organic and small inorganic compounds as well as heat of reaction data.
  • Teaching materials include interactive animations contributed by various individuals at many different universities and colleges.
