Databases

  • SciFinder Web

    SciFinder is a key database for chemistry, chemical and biochemical engineering, environmental sciences, materials science, and geochemistry. Its coverage includes journal articles, conference papers and patents from many patent issuing organizations. You can search by research topic, chemical substance, structure and substructure.

    Individual users must register for an account. Registration is a two-part process and must be completed from within the Unviersity's IP range. We recommend that you don't use your Western Identity username and password when registering for a SciFinder web account.

    Reaxys is a workflow solution for accessing the combined wealth of trustworthy, experimental substance and reaction data and bibliographical data housed in Beilstein, Gmelin and Patent Chemistry Databases. You need to sign up for your individual account for access to Reaxys as of February 20, 2013.

  • Web of Science

    Explore the database with multidisciplinary coverage of over 10,000 high-impact journals in the sciences, social sciences, and arts and humanities, as well as international proceedings coverage for over 120,000 conferences.

  • Scopus

    Scopus is a large abstract and citation database of research literature and quality web sources. Updated daily, Scopus covers 29 million abstracts of over 15,000 peer-reviewed titles from more than 4,000 publishers, 265 million references and 265 million quality web pages through Scirus' web search to cover the scientific web.

  • CCOHS Academic Support Program
    The CCOHS (Canadian Centre for Occupational Health & Safety) Academic Support Program provides tools to educate students about environmental and occupational health and safety. This program includes MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) as well as various databases to find articles on chemical safety.
  • Dissertations & Theses
    Multiple databases from ProQuest provide subject, title, and author access to dissertations accepted at an accredited institution since 1861. Masters theses have been selectively indexed since 1962. You can access full-text documents for many  dissertations and theses.
  • SORD Database

    The database specializes in reactions from MSc and PhD theses (mostly organic). Currently the database includes about 115,000 reaction entries. Learn more about how to use the database from the Quick Start Tutorial.

  • Beilstein/Gmelin
    Beilstein provides property and spectral data for organic substances, while Gmelin provides property and spectral data for inorganic and organometallic substances. Reaxys is the search platform for both handbooks.

  • Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) Patent Database
    This database provides you with access to over 75 years of patent descriptions and images.
  • U.S. Patent Office
    USPTO provides access to full text patents since 1976 as well as full page images since 1790 as well as applications published since March 15, 2001. Full text files are in TIFF format and require a special plug-in for viewing.
  • LexisNexis-Patents
    This database contains U.S. patents from 1971 forward, searchable by keyword, patent number, classification number, lawyer, assignee, inventor, or summary.

  • MERLOT Chemistry Website
    Teaching materials include interactive animations contributed by various individuals at many different universities and colleges.
  • Scirus
    Scirus (the scientific search engine) enables scientists and students to comprehensively search the web for science-specific information. The Scirus search engine charts and pinpoints data, locates university sites and finds reports and articles quickly and easily. A unique feature of this search engine is the suggested list of terms that appear most frequently in your search results which can be use in search refinement.
