PROVINCIAL TRADE/MANUFACTURING DIRECTORIES

This document, created in the early '90's is a useful tool for locating older lists of companies in various industries in the provinces in Canada. A brief description is provided of the type of information found in each directory. Each active link takes you to the WL catalogue record for the items, all of which are governmental resources. At the bottom of each catalogue record, one will find subject links to related materials which may provide similar information, often in a 'younger' publication. The Business library staff has also provided some suggestions for other, non-governmentally published resources at the bottom of this document.

Alberta Manufacturers Index.
Introduction: Manufacturing in Alberta

Section A - Alberta Manufacturing Firms. 1985 Manufacturing firms are listed alphabetically. Provides types of products, location, contact person, telex/telephone number.
Section B - Alberta-Made Products. An alphabetical list of products manufactured. Use this section to locate the name of an Alberta company that produces a specific product.

BRITISH COLUMBIA

British Columbia Manufacturers' Directory: A Directory of Manufacturing Activity in British Columbia. BUSREF HF3229.B8A4

Part I - British Columbia Manufacturers Listed 1987 Alphabetically. Provides name, address, products made, size and phone number.
Part II - Products Manufactured in British Columbia Listed Alphabetically.
Part III - British Columbia map and manufacturers listed by location.

MANITOBA

Manitoba Trade Directory.

Section 1 - Manitoba Manufacturers - Alphabetical list of manufacturers 1988 which includes products, size, address and phone number.
Section 2 - Manitoba Manufactured Products Lists products alphabetically and companies that produce the product.
Section 3 - Manitoba Distributors Alphabetical list of distributors with addresses and phone numbers.
Section 4 - Manitoba Distributors' Products Provides a list of products and indicates who supplies or distributes the products.

NEW BRUNSWICK

Directory of Products and Manufacturers New Brunswick, Canada.

Section 1 - New Brunswick Products - Alphabetical 1988 classification.
Section 2 - New Brunswick Manufacturers - Alphabetical classification, provides address, phone number, contact people, number of employees, products produced and SIC code.
Section 3 - New Brunswick Manufacturers - County classification lists all 15 counties alphabetically. Under each county, municipalities are listed alphabetically followed by companies (alphabetically) within each community.
Section 4 - New Brunswick Manufacturers - Industrial Parks classification lists the 36 industrial parks in N.B. and the companies within each park. Also contains maps, population figures and an explanation of the SIC codes.

NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR

Directory of Manufacturers. Newfoundland and Labrador.

Most of the information in this directory is contained in the alphabetical listing of companies (only those firms in the manufacturing/processing sector are listed). A typical entry includes address, telephone number, contact people, size and products produced. There is also an alphabetical product listing. A supplement lists all Craft Manufacturers and provides addresses and phone numbers.

NOVA SCOTIA

Nova Scotia Directory of Manufacturers.

This directory provides a map of N.S. and a graph with summary data on manufacturing industries in the province. The directory contains the following sections:

Section 1 - Alphabetical classification contains name, address, personal contacts, size, year of establishment and products produced.
Section 2 - Geographical Classification arranges companies by geographic area.
Section 3 - Standard Industrial Classification lists all plants according to SIC number of the product they produce.
Section 4 - Products Classification lists products alphabetically and provides the names of companies producing the product.
Section 5 - Industrial Parks/Malls Classification lists all parks alphabetically and provides names of companies in each park.

PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND

Prince Edward Island Directory of Manufacturing and Processing.

Begins with an economic profile of the Island which includes population figures, transportation facilities, newspapers and radio stations.

Contains the following sections:

SASKATCHEWAN

Saskatchewan Manufacturers' Guide.

Contains four sections:

Company listings - Alphabetical, contains address, phone number, contacts and size.
Product listings - Alphabetical list of products with name of company making the product and the SIC code.
SIC Index - List of products by SIC group. |
Location Index - Alphabetical list of communities with companies in the community.

For Ontario see the very useful Made in Ontario Canada. The directories mentioned above are published by government agencies. Other privately published directories exist. See for example, the various Scott's Directories which are kept in the Reference collection on the main floor of the library.
