CADBURY

Bradley, John, Cadbury's Purple Reign: The Story Behind Chocolate's Best-Loved Brand

Rowlinson, Michael and John Hassard, “The Invention of Corporate Culture: A History of the Histories of Cadbury,” Human Relations, Vol. 46, No3. March 1993, p299.
From the publisher’s website:
“A unique expose of the Cadbury story, providing an unprecedented insight into the makings of an iconic brand.
Cadbury's Puple Reign for the first time tells the in-depth story and definitive history of the Cadbury brand, and how it came to be the world's pre-eminent chocolate brand. It presents a no holds barred account of the rollercoaster ride the organization has experienced that has, ultimately, led to its success. It is a story of endurance, where, in the UK, Cadbury is a clear market leader.
This fascinating journey that has been the history of Cadbury makes it an ideal example with which to illuminate the story of consumerism.  The company was established even before there were a mass of consumers to sell to, and was at the forefront of many of the developments which facilitated the rise of mass markets:

  • ·Putting product quality at the heart of the brand.
  • ·Harnessing the miracles of the Industrial and Transportation Revolutions to drive explosive growth
  • ·Industry consolidation via mergers and acquisitions to cement critical mass
  • ·A radical approach to harnessing the potential of its workforce to create the most effectively run company in Britain
  • ·The virtuous circle of economies of scale which slashed prices and brought chocolate to the masses
  • ·Innovative marketing and selling approaches that put the Cadbury brand into not just the minds of consumers, but their hearts.

Illustrated with fact, anecdote and beautiful images from previously archived material, this book provides the reader with an unprecedented insight into one of the world’s most iconic brands. These insights will help any consumer business that aspire to build longevity for their brand with lessons on how to better endear itself to consumers, and how to turn that relationship into profitable sales.
The book has the full backing from Cadbury and chairman Sir John Sunderland provides the foreword.”

Cadbury, Deborah, Chocolate Wars: The 150-Year Rivalry Between the World's Greatest Chocolate Makers
HD9200.A2C34 2010
“A descendant of the Cadbury family of chocolatiers, author Cadbury is also an award-winning documentary producer for the BBC and has seven other books to her credit. The history of chocolate, from its origins as an exotic Aztec beverage to the most prized confectionery in the world, is told here through the eyes of the British Quaker family that transformed a gritty, oily brew into one of the most sought-after delectable treats on the planet. In doing so, the Cadbury brothers turned their father’s humble and nearly bankrupt business into a globally dominant corporation in the span of two generations. The path to success was not easy, and Cadbury tells the story of fierce competition from names like Fry, Nestlé, Hershey, and Mars, as well as the Dutch and Swiss entrepreneurs who were so crucial in cracking the food chemistry of the cacao bean. Cadbury chronicles 150 years of chocolate wars that only heated up further into a global-merger competition, which saw the venerated Cadbury brand get swallowed up by the food giant Kraft in 2009. This tale of capitalist rivalry mixed with Quaker values makes for a very sweet journey. (from Booklist).

CANADIAN NIAGARA POWER COMPANY

Ball, Norman. The Canadian Niagara Power Company Story.
HD9685.C34C35 2005

The Canadian Niagara Power Company, formed in 1892, has been generating electric power continuously since 1905. With turbines and generators that were once the largest in the world, the company's generating station upstream from Niagara Falls endures as a monument to the fact that natural beauty and industry can co-exist successfully.

Profusely illustrated with historical photographs and illustrations, this tells the story of the impact of electricity on a region and the lives of those who kept the lights on through two world wars, record-breaking storms, and a century of political and economic challenges.
This book is about the harnessing of epic natural power for small towns and small-town life. Chapters cover the many aspects of running not just a generating plant but a full-service electric utility. The company once had three dietitians on staff to provide advice on cooking with electricity for a healthy lifestyle. Linemen have evolved from pole-hopping daredevils to safety-conscious professionals. Above all, it deals honestly with the strains of a company struggling to find its way as its industry changed radically. [From the Boston Mills Press web site, Dec. 2006]

Update: Obituary - Alfred Dickson Billes, Aug. 8, 1928 - July 22, 2008
Dick Billes was the soon of one of the founders of Canadian Tire, John William Billes. An account of his life is found in an obituary by F.F. Langan which appears in the Globe & Mail. See: "Once Seen as the Heir Apparent, He Was Ousted from Canadian Tire", Tuesday, Sept.9, 2008, p.S8.The article also contains a photograph of Dick and Martha Billes that was taken in 1987. The sometimes stormy family relationships are also the subject of the Brown book below.

Update: Obituary - Dean Muncaster  1933 - March 13, 2012
On March 13, 2012 Dean Muncaster died after leading Canadian Tire for over 19 years.  Some of those years were tumultuous and less than stellar,  yet Richard Hobbs (Muncaster's colleague) stated, "He made {Canadian} Tire the most successful public company in terms of growth and profitability in the country and was the darling of the business press." (Globe and Mail April 7, 2012)

CHC HELICOPTERS

Reynolds, John L. "One Hell of a Ride" HC112.5.D62R49 2008
One Hell of a Ride traces the life, triumphs and tragedy of Craig Laurence Dobbin, weaving a tale that is inspiring, amusing, tragic and, like its subject, never less than gripping. Dobbin was an irrepressible Newfoundlander who counted prime ministers and U.S. presidents among his friends, teetered on the edge of bankruptcy for much of his life, and remains a legend among all who knew him. Born during the Great Depression, Dobbin built a small empire in real estate and discovered the joy of fishing in remote salmon pools. To reach these he bought a helicopter. Ten years later, he was running CHC Helicopters, a public corporation earning hundreds of millions of dollars annually, most from ferrying men and equipment to offshore oil platforms. He soon grew the company into the largest operation of its kind in the world. When he died in October 2006, Dobbin left behind a legacy of business and personal achievements unmatched by any Canadian of his time. Everyone who dealt with him agrees: they will never see his like again.

CHESTNUT CANOE COMPANY

Solway, Kenneth, The Story of the Chesnut Canoe

There is another book about the Chestnut Canoe Company by Roger MacGregor – When the Chestnut Was in Flower: Inside the Chestnut Canoe, but it is not available in the Western Libraries. We were prompted to add this entry by an article by Gordon Pitts in The Globe and Mail which will be very useful for researchers interested in this truly Canadian industry. See: “Battling the Market Currents”, which is the cover story in the ROB on Saturday, July 3, 2010. (Mr. Pitts has authored many books contained in this bibliography.)

Along with remarks by some of the major artisans still in the business, you will find brief historic profiles of the following companies, as well as Chestnut:

TEMAGAMI CANOES – Temagami, ON
RED RIVER CANOES – Lorette, Manitoba

CLARK PREPARED FOODS COMPANY

Roberts, Leslie M. “Like Father, Like Sons,” Maclean’s Magazine, 44:9 May 1, 1931 p. 19, 54,
“History and current operation of the Clark prepared foods company, founded in 1877 by William Clark, and carried on by Frederick Clark, director, Hubert Clark, vice-president in charge of production, Harry Clark, president, and Ernest Clark, in charge of the tomato canning operations at Harrow, Ontario. William began by renting an old store front on Saint Antoine Street in Montreal, and became a manufacturer and purveyor of sausages ("Clark's Cambridge Sausage"). Other lines were added (canned tomatoes, canned meats, pork and beans, soups and catsup) and the company moved to larger premises near the Lachine Canal, and later, on Amherst Street, in the building which remains the nucleus of Clark headquarters. Describes a tour of the principal factory in Montreal, "to witness the preparation and packing of foods:" orderly working arrangements, white-uniformed employees, "a place where organized cleanliness is the first consideration." Includes an interview with production chief Hubert Clark”

CLEAR CHANNEL COMMUNICATIONS

Bunzel, Reed. Clear vision : the story of Clear Channel Communications.

"From its founding in 1972 by Red McCombs and Lowry Mays, Clear Channel has grown to become the largest radio- and outdoor-advertising company in the world: although their growth has been surrounded by a fair amount of controversy over business practices, leadership decisions, acquisition strategies, and buyouts. The Clear Channel story is one about chance and circumstance, opportunity and diligence, and this is the only corporate history of Clear Channel that is authorized by the company and includes exclusive interviews with top-level executives. It's a story of vision and foresight, the willingness to take a calculated risk on the unknown, of fiscal prudence, vibrant leadership, and at times, an almost breathtaking capacity to influence the dynamics of the media marketplace. Most importantly it is the story of the entrepreneurial spirit and business acumen of the people who have helped make Clear Channel the media giant that it is today." [from the publisher]

COOLBRANDS INTERNATIONAL INC.

It was announced in the Summer of 2010 that this Markham-based firm would merge with Swisher International Inc. As a result a useful “Ode” to CoolBrands by Joe Castaldo is found in the September 27 issue of Canadian Business, (“The Ode: CoolBrands: 1986-2010” p.25). It is noted that:
“CoolBrands International Inc., once North America's third–largest ice cream company, began as a frozen yogurt stand in a mall north of Toronto in 1986. Brothers Michael and Aaron Serruya, then aged 20 and 18, launched the kiosk after Aaron noticed the popularity of frozen yogurt on a trip to Florida. They dubbed their fledging venture Yogen Fruz.”
“The brothers franchised the concept, and by 1995, there were more than 900 locations across the world. They took Yogen Fruz public that same year and used the proceeds for an acquisition binge, spending millions on a coffee chain, another yogurt line, and a frozen dessert franchiser. The media hailed the affable pair as wunderkind entrepreneurs.’
‘In 1998, the company merged with a U.S. firm that marketed frozen desserts in grocery stores. The deal brought a number of challenges. CoolBrands was now competing with giants Nestlé SA and Unilever for shelf space in stores, and it soon began to accumulate debt. The Serruya brothers also granted themselves multiple voting shares, despite holding a minority equity stake, much to the displeasure of investors. But the year 2000 marked a crowning achievement for the company, which by then had changed its name to CoolBrands. It bought the venerable Eskimo Pie Corp., the Virginia–based creators of the iconic chocolate–covered ice cream bar.”

COSSETTE COMMUNICATION-MARKETING

Johnston, Russell. "Cossette Communication-Marketing" in The Advertising Age Encyclopedia of Advertising, ed. by John McDonough & Karen Egolf, Vol 1, p. 413-415.
HF5803.A38 2003

In early November 2009 it was announced that Cossette Inc., Canada’s largest marketing and advertising agency, was to be purchased by the U.S. firm Mill Road Capital LP. For three discussions of the purchase see: “Cossette Finds White Knight,” by Luann Lasalle, The London Free Press, Nov.11, 2009, p.D10; “Cossette Sold to Mill Road Capital,” and “How the Battle Played Out,” both by Hollie Shaw in The National Post, November 10, 2009. For an earlier background piece see: “A Public Divorce,” by Paul Brent, Canadian Business, September 14, 2009. This is an abstract of the article from ProQuest:

"Cossette Inc's growth from humble Quebec City ad agency to the country's largest advertising and communications company was no accident. For more than 30 years, the successful formula never wavered: disciplined management led by founding partners Claude Lessard and Francois Duffar, deep personal relationships with blue-chip corporate clients, and aggressive expansion. But in July, Duffar emerged from two years of semi-retirement to launch a hostile $82.7-million takeover bid for the firm he spent a career building. Observers suspect Duffar has likely been assembling allies for his takeover bid since May, when he announced his resignation as an officer of the company and started a weakening of the multi-share voting trust that locked control of the firm in the hands of insiders. Cossette has formed a committee to consider the unsolicited offer and explore various strategic options, a process that could include directors seeking out offers from a friendly bidder.”

At the time of the takeover, the Cossette website could be found at cossette.com. In anticipation that the site might change or disappear, we will provide here for your convenience the historical information provided on that site:

“Cossette’s roots go back 45 years when designer Claude Cossette established a graphic design studio in Quebec City. In 1972, Claude Lessard, a young graduate in business administration only recently hired by the firm, convinced four colleagues to invest in and revitalize the small communications company. From that point forward, Cossette experienced remarkable growth and recognition. The firm opened offices in Montreal (1974), Toronto (1981), and Vancouver (1985). It also created new practices in direct marketing (1979), public relations (1980), graphic design (1981), branding (1985), research (1988), and sponsorships and interactive marketing (1994). Cossette forged strong relationships with major clients during these early years that continue today, including McDonald’s Restaurants of Canada (1977), Bell Canada (1982), General Motors of Canada (1990), Coca-Cola Ltd. (1993) and Dairy Farmers of Canada (since 1995). Cossette also won prestigious awards such as its first Coq d’argent from the Publicité Club de Montréal (1973), and was named Marketing Magazine’s Agency of the Year in Canada for its first time (1991).
In 1999, Cossette reached another turning point. It became a public company to achieve new growth through acquisitions as well as organically. After the acquisition of two small agencies, in Vancouver and Halifax, Cossette looked to extend its reach across North America. In 2001, it acquired a New York advertising agency now known as Cossette Communications. In 2003, Cossette crossed the ocean, establishing a first office in the United Kingdom through the acquisition of Identica, an internationally acclaimed branding and design firm. In 2004, the acquisition of PainePR in Los Angeles further strengthened Cossette’s position in the U.S. and in public relations.
Then came the 2004 acquisition in the U.K. of Band & Brown, a public relations firm, followed by the advertising agency Miles Calcraft Briginshaw Duffy (MCBD) and its direct, promotional and interactive marketing subsidiary, Elvis Communications in 2005. In July 2007, Cossette acquired Dare Digital, a London-based interactive marketing agency. London now offers the convergent platform of Cossette communications services to the U.K. market.
More recently, in May 2008, Cossette acquired a majority stake in Rocket XL in Los Angeles, an online marketing firm specialised in word-of-mouth and social media marketing.
At the same time over the years, internal growth and innovation resulted in the creation of many new and state-of-the-art practices including strategic planning, B2B marketing, urban marketing, sports marketing and branded content.
Today, Cossette is one of the top communications companies in the world, ranked 23rd in Advertising Age’s 2008 World Top 50 Marketing Organizations.” [from Cossette.com, 2009]

Also provided on the website are the annual reports from 2003 to 2008. The Johnston Library has some “Financial Post Cards” relating to the company from 2001-2003. The company is to be taken private so the annual reports may not be required in the future.B

CUMBERLAND PACKING CORPORATION

Cohen, Rich. Sweet and Low: A Family Story
CT274.E375C64 2006

"This is the family that invented first the sugar packet and then Sweet'N Low, capitalizing on Americans' diet madness to build a company that by 1996 was producing 50 million packets of artificial sweetener a day at a factory in Brooklyn.... Cohen's grandfather Benjamin Eisenstadt, a lawyer turned short-order cook who started the whole enterprise, transformed his cafeteria near the Brooklyn Navy Yard into a tea bag factory after the end of World War II sapped his business, and had the idea to put sugar in little bags after being frustrated by the congealed sugar clogging a glass dispenser on a tabletop.Ben took his invention, unpatented, to a sugar company, which apparently stole it, rendering him forever suspicious. He got his revenge in the mid-50's, however, when he and Uncle Marvelous came up with the idea for Sweet'N Low. They positioned it first as an aid to diabetics, but dieters began swiping it from hospitals and restaurants, and soon the little pink packets had largely replaced not only the sugar dispenser but sugar itself.
