TEXAS INSTRUMENTS
Pirtle, Caleb
Engineering the World: Stories from the First 75 Years of Texas Instruments (TK 7809.P57 2005)
"This volume celebrates the can-do, risk-taking, creative pioneers of Texas Instruments from its inception in the 1930s as a tiny geophysical exploration company working out of the back of a truck in the oilfields of the Southwest, to its status in the world today as one of the world's leading electronics companies. From the determination of its founders—Eugene McDermott, Erik Jonsson, Cecil Green, and Pat Haggerty—to the genius of its inventors such as Nobel prizewinner Jack Kilby, TI has transformed the world in seven and a half decades. In photographs and anecdotes, the book tells TI's history of innovation in products and technologies, including the development of the first commercial silicon transistors, the first integrated circuits, and the first electronic hand-held calculators. Today, this Fortune 500 company is at the forefront of digital signal processing and analog technologies—the semiconductor engines of the Internet age. TIers are currently working on solutions for large global markets such as wireless and broadband access, and for a variety of emerging markets such as digital projection systems and digital audio."[publisher's blurb]

THOMPSON, J.W. COMPANY
Sutton, Denise. Globalizing ideal beauty : how female copywriters of the J. Walter Thompson Advertising Agency redefined beauty for the Twentieth Century.
DBWSTK HF5813.U6S87 2009
"Sutton's book, based on her doctoral dissertation, provides a glimpse into the origins of advertising and the key role that women played in creating today's global standard of feminine beauty. Focusing on the women's editorial department at the J. Walter Thompson advertising agency in the early 1900s, Sutton describes the team of talented women headed by Helen Lansdowne--a hero for the times, who not only rose to the top at JWT but also married the company's president. Lansdowne's team, relying on its considerable skills and "feminine intuition," helped build the images of such well-known brands as Woodbury, Jergen's, Crisco, Lux, Yuban, and Cutex. Woodbury soap's 1910 ad--"The skin you love to touch"--is the first use of sex appeal in advertising. While chronicling these trailblazing women who made their mark when women could not even vote, Sutton provides insights into their backgrounds, observing that many were suffragists and reformers. Written for the "new woman," some of their ads were cautionary--"Lux won't redden your hands," while others were aspirational--"The Duchesse de Richelieu tells how to have lovely skin." A useful volume for marketing as well as women's studies collections." Choice, April 2010.

TILDEN RENT-A-CAR CO. LTD
Update: July, 2008 - Obituary
For a very thorough and well-researched essay that includes considerable historical background see: "He Helped Build Tilden Rent-a-Car Into a Thriving, All-Canadian Concern," by Sandra Martin, The Globe and Mail, July 30, 2008, p.S8.
The "He" is Walter Tilden who died July 9, 2008 in Toronto.
Tilden was formed in 1925 and for much of its history was the largest rental car company in Canada. The company was sold to National Car Rental in 1996. Alhthough there is no book about the company, a good historical account from the Financial Times is provided here.
A color photograph of Ted, Walter and Bruce Tilden is found in the Metropolitan Toronto Business Journal, Vol. 73, No.3, April 1983, p19. The article, "Toronto Roots", discusses Toronto's family-run businesses.

Kealing, Bob. Tupperware Unsealed: Brownie Wise, Earl Tupper and the Home Party Pioneers.
HD9662.C664T865 2008
[from the University Press of Florida site]:
"Brownie Wise, the first woman to appear on the cover of Business Week, was the driving force behind making Tupperware a household name. Fired under mysterious circumstances, she was written out of Tupperware history and died in obscurity.
A trailblazing businesswoman decades ahead of her time, Wise created the Tupperware "home party" phenomenon in the 1950s. Her drive and creativity fueled sales and profits for the once sleepy plastic containers company. Earl Tupper anointed Wise as the company figurehead and marketing guru. Long before Disney, her lavish national headquarters drew tourists from near and far to the outskirts of Orlando, Florida, where she held court with the press, politicians, and movie stars.
Wise's idea to market Tupperware exclusively through in-home sales sparked a cultural revolution in post World War II America. For the first time, minimally educated and economically invisible housewives had opportunities for careers. She became a cultlike, charismatic leader for the Tupperware faithful, so popular that "Tupperware Ladies" would vie to win the clothes right off her back. Behind the scenes, few knew Wise was stalked by her alcoholic and abusive ex-husband and feared him appearing out of nowhere to cause shame, embarrassment, or worse.
The adoration from a legion of Tupperware dealers made her sudden fall from grace even more shocking and dramatic. At the height of her national celebrity, Tupper unceremoniously released her from the company. Journalist Bob Kealing has interviewed pioneering executives who helped build the company alongside Wise, reviewed hundreds of primary source documents written by Tupper and Wise, and obtained access to a wealth of previously unknown information, including sealed court depositions regarding a series of boat accidents successfully kept out of the press by the company, and details of secret recordings made by Tupperware Home Parties management seeking to prevent their distributors from unionizing.
Wise's rise and fall, and her relationship with the eccentric Tupper, is the stuff of legend; a story told finally, and fully, in Tupperware Unsealed.

Leading for Growth: How Umpqua Bank Got Cool and Created a Culture of Greatness
HD 58.9.D39 2007
"When Ray Davis took over the local 40-person South Umpqua Bank in 1994, many people in the industry poked fun at his insistence that employees answer the phone with a cheery "World's Greatest Bank." Eleven years, $7 billion in assets, and 128 branches (or " bank stores" in Umpqua lingo) later, the moniker seems quite apt. Other banks scratched their heads when Davis sent his tellers to Ritz-Carlton to learn customer service and were intrigued when he hired a cutting-edge design firm to completely re-think retail layout. Now, with a top design award under their belt, a name change (there never was a North Umpqua bank), and a completely new definition of the banking business, Umpqua has become the darling of the entrepreneurial press and a growth powerhouse. The New York Times calls Umpqua " Starbucks with tellers ."

Renewing Unilever: Transformation and Tradition
HD2755.5.J676 2005
Unilever's brands can now be found in one out of every two households in the world. This arresting and impressive fact shows the scope and scale of this unique global corporation. Geoffrey Jones, a leading business historian from the Harvard Business School takes us inside this corporation, which from it's origins in Britain and the Netherlands, has become a worldwide manufacturer of fast moving consumer products. Unilever's operations cover food and home and personal care, and it's brands include Lipton Tea, Hellmann's Bird's Eye, Wall's, Ben and Jerry's, Surf, Domestos, Comfort, Dove, Sunsilk, Pond's, Signal, Axe and Calvin Klein. In particular the book focuses on the evolution of the company over the last half century. Managing such a firm in the era of globalization posed enormous challenges. The book covers the company's strategies and provides compelling evidence of its decision-making, marketing, brand management, innovation, acquisition strategies, corporate culture and human resource management. The author has had full access to corporate archives and executives and provides us with a unique insight into the workings and strategies of one of the world's oldest and largest multinationals."

Sessions, Sterling D and Gene A. Sessions. A History of Utah International: From Construction to Mining, HD9715.U54U87 2005
"The story of how the Utah Construction Company, founded in Ogden, Utah, in 1900, became Utah International, a multinational corporation, is known to historians of the American West but perhaps not by the general public. The publication of this book remedies that lack. During its first decades, the company built railroads and dams and was one of the Six Companies Consortium that built Hoover Dam. Utah Construction also engaged in numerous war-contract activities during World War II; in the postwar period, the company expanded its activities into mining and land development and moved its headquarters to San Francisco. Changing its name to Utah Construction and Mining, and eventually to Utah International, the corporation became one of the most successful multinational mining companies in the world. In 1976, Utah International and General Electric negotiated the largest corporate merger in the United States up until that time. Based on the Utah International archives housed in the Stewart Library at Weber State University, the story of Utah International describes more than projects: it is also the story of how two remarkable entrepreneurs, Marriner Stoddard Eccles and Edmund Wattis Littlefield, transformed the company incorporated in 1900 by the Wattis brothers into the largest and most profitable mining company in the United States.

VANCOUVER SUN
Berton, Pierre, “Vancouver's rising Sun,” Maclean’s Magazine, 61:13 July 1, 1948 p. 7, 39-41
“History and operation of the Vancouver Sun, with biographical notes about Robert Cromie, who took over the paper in 1917, current president and publisher Donald Cromie and his brother Sam, now vice-president and mechanical superintendent. Since Donald took control in 1942 the Sun's circulation has doubled from 75,000 to 150,000, the fifth largest in Canada. Donald Cromie believes a newspaper should be a forum for ideas: he lets his three popular local columnists, Elmore Philpott, Mamie Moloney and Jack Scott write as they please, even when they violently disagree with Sun policy. Cromie has accepted the Newspaper Guild, a CCL union, has introduced a profit-sharing plan, a 37-hour week, installed a money-losing cafeteria for employees, instituted a pension plan, life insurance policies, hospital and medical insurance. There has never been a strike at the Sun. The company has just built a $450,000 job printing plant and is spending about a million dollars refurbishing the present building”

VAN HOUTTE INC.
The company was established in Montreal in 1919. In the Fall of 2010 Van Houtte was acquired by the U.S. coffee producer, Green Mountain Roasters Inc. for the reported price of $915 million. Researchers interested in the history of the company will find useful material in the news accounts and some relevant citations are provided here:
“Green Mountain Targets Canadian Coffee Drinkers with Van Houtte Purchase,” Bertrand Marcotte, G&M, Sep. 14, 2010.
“ Green Mountain to Buy Van Houtte Coffee,” John Shmuel, Financial Post, Sep. 14, 2010.
This is not the first time that Van Houtte has been purchased by a U.S. firm. In the Summer of 2007, it was sold to the private equity firm, Littlejohn, & Co. One article from that period – “Shareholders Approve Takeover of Van Houtte,” Toronto Star, July 10, 2007.
The Johnston Library possesses reports and documents related to Van Houtte. Note that the reports may be filed under different names . For an article relating to the various names see: “Van Houtte Name Has Stirred up a lot of Confusion,” The Gazette, (Montreal), March 31, 1990 (variant names are A.L Van Houtte Ltee; Gerard Van Houtte Inc.)
In anticipation that the historical information currently (2010) available on the Van Houtte website may disappear, it has been copied below for the purposes of historical research:
Van Houtte
It is noted on the site that the company began in 1919. “...we operate the largest coffee services network in North america serving more than 71,000 workplaces in most major cities.
Our activities fall into three distinct and complementary areas of expertise: the roasting and marketing of gourmet coffees, provision of office coffee services, and manufacturing of single-cup brewing equipment”.
Through approximately 100 corporate outlets and franchises, we serve more than two million cups of coffee every day in cities large and small across North America, and three million cups overall.
Van Houtte is the largest Canadian roaster and distributor of gourmet coffees to food retailers. Through our subsidiary VKI Technologies, we are also a world leader in the design, manufacture and distribution of coffee-making equipment and related products. In addition, we operate a network of about 70 cafés in the province of Québec.
Headquartered in Montreal, Canada, Van Houtte employs 1,900 people in Canada and the United States.
tradition of excellence... since 1919
Taste, choice, quality... these have been our company's guiding principles ever since Albert-Louis Van Houtte, our founder, first opened his specialty grocery store in Montreal in 1919.
Like many young men in the early part of the 20th century, Albert-Louis emigrated to North America from Europe, carrying his hopes and dreams for a brighter future. Arriving in Canada from France in 1912, Albert-Louis lost no time in deciding that he would go into business for himself – as an importer of horses.
After the First World War forced him to give up this business and pursue other activities, he cast around for a new line of work – one which would draw directly on his European heritage. In 1919, Albert-Louis opened a grocery store in Montreal and began importing specialty European goods. Steeped in the culture of the Old World, he quickly realized that it was difficult, if not impossible, to obtain the fine coffee that he loved.
Rather than settle for the ordinary, however, he began roasting his own coffee in small batches at the back of his shop, using traditional European roasting methods. By bringing out a few simple wooden crates to serve as chairs, Albert-Louis established his first "café" where customers could enjoy his fine European blends. Word of his excellent coffee spread quickly and Albert-Louis' reputation grew as his business prospered.
By 1944, the year of Albert-Louis' death, the "Maison A.L. Van Houtte" – now a family business – was firmly established.
Faithful to Albert-Louis' original mission
Throughout the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, our company continued to grow, inspired by Albert-Louis' passion for fine coffees and unparalleled customer service.
In the 1970s, we began building a network of coffee shops serving gourmet coffees – the forerunners of the many coffee bars and cafés that now dot our urban landscape. At the same time, we started forging close relationships with grocery stores so that customers could enjoy our coffees at home.
The 1980s and 1990s were a time of renewal for our company. Under the vigorous leadership of Paul-André Guillotte and Benoît Beauregard, Van Houtte expanded into other areas of the coffee business, such as providing coffee for people at work.
Although Albert-Louis Van Houtte would have difficulty recognizing his company today, he would be pleased nonetheless to know that his original vision and passion continues to guide everything we do. We roast all of our coffees using the traditional European roasting methods adopted then perfected by Albert-Louis himself, and we remain committed to offering our customers a unique range of fine coffees perfect for a variety of tastes and lifestyles.

WIEDER
Weider, Joe & Ben Weider. Brothers of Iron: How the Weider Brothers Created the Fitness Movement and Built a Business Empire
GV545.5.W43 2006
"In the depths of the Great Depression a scrawny, dirt-poor Jewish kid with a seventh-grade education picked up a barbell and got hooked on weight training. Building his muscles gave him confidence and hope for a better life. He pledged to make the great, transforming power of strength training available to everyone and to give bodybuilding all the glory it deserved.
The kid, Joe Weider, enlisted his younger brother Ben in his quest, and together the Weider brothers accomplished things much bigger than Joe's boyhood dreams. The little muscle magazine Joe started, working at his family's dining room table, grew into a publishing empire. From a backyard barbell business, Joe and Ben built equipment and food supplement companies each as big as Weider Publishing. And they transformed bodybuilding into a hugely successful sport, organized under one of the largest and best-run athletic federations in the world." [from the publisher's site - 2007]

"A lively history of one of America's oldest publishing houses, published in conjunction with Wiley's bicentennial:
Founded in New York City when Thomas Jefferson was president, Wiley has been a significant player in the publishing industry for two centuries. Now, on the occasion of Wiley's bicentennial, a distinguished team of authors brings Wiley's rich history to life, showing how the company has reacted to trends within the publishing industry as well as to larger economic, social, and cultural forces. Knowledge for Generations sheds light on the long-term strengths and weaknesses of Wiley's business, illuminates the continuities and changes over time, and shows how family ownership has influenced the company's strategies, values, and corporate culture. Drawing on unrestricted access to company archives and interviews with key executives, the authors capture a story of sustained business success, intriguing personalities, and dramatic changes in the industry. Illustrated throughout with illuminating photographs and graphics, Knowledge for Generations is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of publishing."[from the Wiley site - 2008]

WILLSON STATIONERS
The Business Library has Financial Post Investment Reports for this company for the years from 1950 to 1965. Begun in 1900, the company was the last major Canadian-owned stationary and office supply store. In 1999 the store sought protection under the Companies Creditors Arrangement Act. For your convenience we have attached an article from the Manitoba Business Journal in 1969 that contains a short historical sketch.
