Articles

  • Includes MEDLINE, PREMEDLINE and unique citations from the following now defunct IGM databases : AIDSLINE, BIOETHICSLINE, HISTLINE, and HealthSTAR. Produced by the National Library of Medicine, PubMed is an international bibliographic database of over 4500 biomedical journals. It covers the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system and the preclinical sciences from 1966 to the present. Link outs to select full text articles are also available from PubMed. Only link outs for journals in which Western Libraries or individuals have subscriptions are accessible. Coverage extends back to 1950.
  • The Excerpta Medica database (EMBASE) produced by Elsevier Science, is a major biomedical and pharmaceutical database covering the following fields: drug research, pharmacology, pharmaceutics, toxicology, clinical and experimental human medicine, health policy and management, public health, occupational health, environmental health, drug dependence and abuse, psychiatry, forensic medicine, and biomedical engineering/instrumentation. There is selective coverage for nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, psychology, and alternative medicine.
  • Scopus is an abstracts database of 27 million records (back to 1966) covering articles from 14,200 peer-reviewed titles, including international publishers. Subject coverage includes: Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Engineering; Life and Health Sciences; Social Sciences, Psychology and Economics; Biological, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; and General Sciences.
  • Web of Science provides access to three multidisciplinary databases of bibliographic information indexed so that you can search for specific articles by subject, author, journal, and/or author address. Each Web of Science database includes the article's cited reference list (often called its bibliography). This unique feature allows searching for articles that cite a known author or work.

Atlases

  • This atlas uses quality photographs and brief synopses to cover information about skin diseases.   It combines over 900 color photographs with descriptions of skin diseases and systemic diseases with skin manifestations to create a useful reference in the field.
  • Clinical Dermatology:  A Colour Guide to Diagnosis and Therapy presents a wealth of features to enable you to identify, treat and manage skin diseases.  Atlas-like guidance, complemented with detailed diagnostic text, combine to offer a user-friendly resource.
  • This atlas includes more than 900 color photographs that show common diseases at various stages, not just in their most dramatic form. This resource can be used to track the evolution of conditions from initial irritation and blemish through eruption to the secretion of pus. A glossary defines the many terms used by both the dermatologist and the ophthalmologist.
  • Differential Diagnosis in Dermatology includes sections on treatment, as well as serving as a useful guide to dermatological diagnosis in the surgery or clinic.  This resource provides clinical photography, practical text and diagrams throughout. The chapters are divided into different body areas, and possible diagnosis can be made by reading through the text or looking through the photographs.

Clinical Tools

  • DynaMed is an evidence-based, clinical reference tool created by physicians for physicians and other health care professionals for use primarily at the 'point-of-care.' DynaMed contains AHFS drug information, article references, medical calculators, patient information, and thousands of topics organized into clinical summaries. Content in DynaMed is updated daily. 

    In order to obtain or renew a Dynamed Mobile serial number either send an email to dynamedsupport@ebscohost.com  or phone 1-800-758-5995. Please include or have available your full name, the name of institution, and the type of device you are using. You must provide a valid Western email address, ie. one that ends with @uwo.ca in order to receive a serial number. The serial number will be emailed to the @uwo.ca address you provide.  .


  • The American College of Physicians' Physicians' Information and Education Resource offers a Web-based evidence-based clinical guidance designed for rapid access to clinical information at the point of care by physicians and other health care providers.
  • Essential Evidence Plus is a tool that makes it possible to search a number of medical information resources and decision support calculators simultaneously. The resources include the Cochrane database of systematic reviews, clinical practice guidelines, patient education handouts and summaries - called POEMs (Patient Oriented Evidence that Matters) - on various medical topics. Western libraries' subscription to this resource includes a free download of the PDA version.   • UpToDate is an information resource for health professionals designed to answer clinical questions by summarizing published evidence and making specific recommendations for patient care.
  • The TRIP Database is free unified search tool of evidence-based sites such as ACP Journal Club, Bandolier, Cochrane, DARE, Health Technology Assessment, and the National Guideline Clearing House. TRIP is produced by the Centre for Research Support in the UK.
  • Produced by the Canadian Pharmacists Association, the online Compendium of Pharmaceuticals and Specialties (e-CPS) provides health care professionals with web access to the most current Canadian drug information.
  • Natural Standard is an international research collaboration that aggregates and synthesizes data on complementary and alternative therapies. Using a comprehensive methodology and reproducible grading scales, information is created that is evidence-based, consensus-based, and peer-reviewed, tapping into the collective expertise of a multidisciplinary Editorial Board.

  • The SMART Imagebase is a premier database of accurate, high quality medical illustrations, animations, and interactive multimedia. The collection contains thousands of images depicting normal anatomy, physiology, embryology, and histology, as well as the web's largest repository of reference illustrations depicting surgery, trauma, pathology, diseases and conditions. Images are available for downloading and educational use.

  • Clinical Medicine Videos from the New England Journal of Medicine teach procedures requiring skilled techniques and specialized physical examination.
  • University of Iowa’s gallery of medical pictures and their directory of medical image pages on the web.
  • The Public Health Image Library (PHIL) is a collection of photographs, illustrations, and multimedia files from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  The PHIL contains a very good collection of microscopic images related to infectious disease.
  • This site provides access to prerecorded webcasts of surgical procedures performed in various medical centres in the United States. The videos last for an hour. You need RealPlayer (http://www.real.com) installed on your computer to be able to play the videos.
