Biography - Warren Bennis (1925 - )

In a recent issue of the Harvard Business Review, (May, 2005) Bennis and co-author James O'Toole are critical of the direction that business schools have generally taken. They argue that "Business schools have taken the wrong track....By allowing the scientific research model to drive out all others, business schools are institutionalizing their own irrelevance." For more see: "How Business Schools Lost Their Way," HBR, May 2005.

The purpose of this brief guide is to direct you quickly to information by and about Warren Bennis who is a well known scholar, particularly in the field of leadership. At present Bennis is at the University of Southern California where he is a Distinguished Professor of Business Administration and Founding Chairman of the USC Leadership Institute. For additional biographical details see: "Bennis, Warren" in The IEBM Handbook of Management Thinking, ed. by Malcom Warner, p.66. As well, provided below you will find several interviews with Bennis, one of which is from the Ivey Business Journal. Bennis also gave a lecture here as part of the Wettlaufer Lecture Series and a copy of the video is available.
In a recent short summary Bennis listed four important factors that are "critical for leading in this new world":
1) "One is the adaptive capacity, which I think is probably the sine qua non, absolutely the most essential and central aspect of leadership in this environment of complexity and turbo-change."
2) "The second critical ingredient is the capacity to engage followers in shared meaning - to align the stars around a common, meaningful goal."
3) "Third, leaders are really going to have to spend a long time - and it's a continual process - finding out who they themselves are: learning their own voice, learning how they affect other people, learning a great deal about emotional intelligence."
4) "And finally, leaders will have to rely on a moral compass, a set of principles, a belief system, a set of convictions."
For a more complete explication see: "Leading Mangers to Adapt and Grow," by Bennis in Best Practice: Ideas and Insights From the World's Foremost Business Thinkers, p. 335. For a general overview of leadership theories a good place to start is the section on "Management/Leadership", in Vol. 3 of Theories and Models in Applied Behavioral Science.
