Biographies & Autobiographies

It is difficult to locate biographical or autobiographical works unless one is looking for a specific individual. Such books are often classified under a number of different headings (e.g. Businessmen-United States - Biography; Executives - Canada - Biography). Since biographical works in business can be hard to find, the Business Library Staff identified recent arrivals and listed them below. It is by no means an exhaustive list. In most cases, considerable additional information is available by looking at the full bibliographic record for each entry on the library Online Public Catalogue.

Dhirubhai Ambani's life is a rags-to-riches story, from Bombay's crowded pavements and bazaars to the city's extravagantly wealthy social circles where business tycoons, stockmarket speculators, smugglers, politicians and Hindi film stars mingle, make money, make and break marriages and carry out prolonged feuds-sometimes violent, often histrionic."

Barton, Bruce
The Man Everybody Knew: Bruce Barton and the Making of Modern America
BUSSTK E748.B264F75 2005
"Everyone knew him then: Bruce Barton was a cultural icon. Two-thirds of American history textbooks today cite him to illustrate the 1920s adoration of the business mentality that then dominated American culture. Historians quote from his enormous best-seller, The Man Nobody Knows, in which Barton called Jesus the "founder of modern business" who "picked up twelve men from the bottom ranks of business and forged them into an organization that conquered the world." But few know Bruce Barton now: he is the most famous twentieth-century American not to rate a biography. Richard Fried's compelling new study captures the full dimensions of Barton's varied and fascinating life. More than a popularizer of the entrepreneurial Jesus, he was a prolific writer—of novels, magazine articles, interviews with the mighty, pithy editorials of uplift. He edited a weekly magazine that anticipated the format of Life. Most famously, he co-founded the advertising agency that became Batten, Barton, Durstine and Osborn and grew to symbolize "Madison Avenue." He made GM and GE household initials. Barton's religious writings, especially The Man Nobody Knows, epitomized modernist religious thought in the twenties—at one point he had two religious books on the best-seller list. As a political spin merchant, he advanced the careers of Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover; his agency scripted later campaigns for Republicans, notably Dwight Eisenhower. Barton himself was twice elected to Congress, ran for the U.S. Senate in 1940, and that year lent his name to FDR's famous mocking litany, "Martin, Barton, and Fish." In Richard Fried's illuminating biography, Barton comes to life as a man who often initiated, sometimes followed, and occasionally fought the social and political trends of his times—but always defined their essential qualities. He can truly be called a key figure in a large territory of the American mind. With 8 pages of black-and-white photographs." [from the publisher's site - 2007]

Bhattacharyya, Kumar
Lorenz, Andrew
Kumar Bhattacharyya: The Unsung Guru (TA 190.L67 2002) "For more than 20 years, Professor Kumar Bhattacharyya has been the most influential but least well-known manufacturing industry expert in Britain. He has advised two Prime Ministers – Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair – and a succession of senior government officials on matters ranging from the privatisation of British Steel to the future of the car industry. Bhattacharyya is also a unique academic entrepreneur: today, Warwick Manufacturing Group, the unit inside Warwick University that he founded in 1979, is Britain's answer to MIT (the Massachusetts Institute of Technology). WMG has annual revenues of £80m, educates more than 5,000 post-graduates and managers a year through its worldwide network of operations, and has won international renown with its philosophy of breaking down the barriers between academia and industry. Bhattacharyya's is a remarkable story, but one that has
never been told– until now." [ Somewhat skeptical of this publisher's blurb, we found that indeed, Bhattacharyya is a rather important figure. See, for example, Frank Fitzgibbon's piece - "Honour at last for unsung hero of British industry - Book of the week" in The Sunday Times, June 9, 2002 which is available to you via Factiva.]

Fischer Black and the Revolutionary Idea of Finance
BUS HG 172.F53M44 2005
"Fischer Black and the Revolutionary Idea of Finance explores Fischer Black’s intellectual journey from Harvard to the offices of ADL, from the University of Chicago to MIT, and then to Goldman Sachs. Years of research and interviews with Black’s business and academic associates, as well as family and friends, are distilled into a scholarly yet personal story of the formation and development of the extraordinary mind and unique character of this unassuming renegade. This poignant book tells the story of one man’s intellectual adventure at the very center of modern finance. It is a story about the birth of quantitative finance and financial engineering. It is also the story about the continuing human quest to defeat the "dark forces of time and ignorance," as John Maynard Keynes famously put it."

Stealing Time: Steve Case, Jerry Levin, and the Collapse of AOL Time Warner
Klein, Alec. HE 7583.U6.K54 2003
From Booklist:
"In 1999 Wall Street was enamored with anything dot-com, and America Online was adding new subscribers in droves by giving away billions of free disks. Old-economy media giant Time Warner was trying to figure out how to make money in this new Internet thing. Its CEO, Jerry Levin, was eager to bring the company into the computer-friendly twenty-first century. Steve Case, CEO of AOL, knew the ride wouldn't last forever and shrewdly leveraged the inflated AOL stock to purchase the much larger Time Warner. Klein fascinatingly fills in the gaps of what is known of this, the largest merger in U.S. history. It turned out to be the signal of the end as this deal revealed to all that the Internet could not stand on its own. What was supposed to have been a synergy of new and old media turned out to be a total culture clash that led to disastrous results for the company and its stockholders. As a reporter for the Washington Post since 2000, Klein's investigative reporting of AOL Time Warner's business practices led to serious government investigations. Under pressure, several top AOL executives, including both Case and Levin, were forced to resign". David Siegfried

We Shall Not Fail: The Inspiring Leadership of Winston Churchill
Sandys, Celia and Littman, Jonathan. DA 566.9.C5S266 2003
"In We Shall Not Fail, Churchill's granddaughter Celia Sandys has distilled the essential principles of leadership that guided Churchill throughout his remarkable career." "Heralded as the most significant English leader in history, and certainly the greatest orator of his time, Churchill seemed to have been born with the ability to lead. Yet for all his natural gifts, Churchill constantly worked to make himself a better leader, embarking early on a self-taught course of study. Frail and sickly as a young man, Churchill became a crack shot and fiercely brave soldier on the outposts of the British Empire." "His dedication to self-improvement and effectiveness resulted in an extraordinary ability to persevere and motivate others. He pressed for results through his red-tinged "Action This Day" memos and face-to-face meetings with his ministers and generals; he pushed for arms commitments from Roosevelt in letters and telegrams; and, most of all, he made his vigorous and undeniable presence felt in visits to the troops and the latest bombed-out London neighborhood." More than just a biography, We Shall Not Fail highlights and celebrates the character that made Churchill a leader for the ages - his courage, his magnanimity, his impatience with bullies, his passion. Drawing on vivid stories, letters, and speeches, Sandys reveals the lessons we must learn if we are to lead in today's tough business environment by studying the actions and words of a man who to this day remains an inspiration to all."

Cook, Bill
Hammel, Bob.
The Bill Cook Story: Ready Fire, Aim!
“The subject of this biography, Bill Cook, is said to 'epitomize the American success story'. From the early days of conducting business from the spare bedroom in his apartment, Cook built up a global multi-billion dollar business. So far, so American Pie. But the twist in the tale is that Cook continued to live a modest life and spends his money on a wide array of philanthropic causes, from historic preservation to marching bands. Whilst it seems a bit of an exaggeration to suggest this is typical (most super-wealthy givers seem comfortable being simultaneously conspicuous consumers and philanthropic), it is always fascinating to gain insights into the life and thoughts of notable donors. Given unlimited access to the subject and his wife, the author is able to paint a particularly intimate portrait, albeit one that is written in a style that never lets the reader forget his day job as a sports journalist. Readers will either like or loathe Hammel's writing style -- breathlessly short sections, bullet-pointed paragraphs and a plot-driven account full of narrative tricks -- but those who stick with the text will emerge with many insights into the mind of a generous, though probably atypical, American businessman.”  Beth Breeze, Publications Editor, Philanthropy UK Newsletter, September 2008, Issue 34

Crow, Trammell
Trammell Crow: A Legacy of Real Estate Business Innovation
Ewald, William Bragg HC102.5.C79E95 2005
"The life of Trammell Crow, real estate guru and maverick entrepreneur, is outlined in this detailed biography and homage to innovative business strategy. From his start as a warehouse broker in Dallas to his halcyon days as the man behind such landmarks as Atlanta's Peach Tree Center, the Embarcadero Center, and the Dallas Market Center, this book makes a lucid connection between Crowe's unorthodox but brilliant partnership-based corporate plan and his astonishing rise to eminence in the real estate world. The careful revelation of Crowe's business philosophy makes this book a must-have for budding business entrepreneurs and real estate veterans."

“In this engaging book, award-winning business writer Rod McQueen examines how the pugnacious personality and hard-driving leadership style of Dominic D'Alessandro led Manulife Financial to its position as one of the largest and most profitable life insurance companies in North America, and the fourth largest in the world. From D'Alessandro's role in the successful demutualization and conversion of the company to public company status in 1999, which set the stage for Manulife to become a world leader, to D'Alessandro's successful completion of Canada's largest cross-border merger, Manulife captures the story of 15 years of outstanding business leadership.”

Reynolds, John, One Hell of a Ride: How Craig Dobbin Built the World’s Largest Helicopter Company BUSSTK HC112.5.D62R49 2008
One Hell of a Ride traces the life, triumphs and tragedy of Craig Laurence Dobbin, weaving a tale that is inspiring, amusing, tragic and, like its subject, never less than gripping. Dobbin was an irrepressible Newfoundlander who counted prime ministers and U.S. presidents among his friends, teetered on the edge of bankruptcy for much of his life, and remains a legend among all who knew him. Born during the Great Depression, Dobbin built a small empire in real estate and discovered the joy of fishing in remote salmon pools. To reach these he bought a helicopter. Ten years later, he was running CHC Helicopters, a public corporation earning hundreds of millions of dollars annually, most from ferrying men and equipment to offshore oil platforms. He soon grew the company into the largest operation of its kind in the world. When he died in October 2006, Dobbin left behind a legacy of business and personal achievements unmatched by any Canadian of his time. Everyone who dealt with him agrees: they will never see his like again.

Softwar - An Intimate Portrait of Larry Ellison and Oracle
Symonds, MatthewHD 9696.63.U62E4478 2003
"Symonds was technology editor at the Economist when Ellison invited him to collaborate on a book about e-business, but the journalist decided he would rather write a profile of the software tycoon, one of Silicon Valley's most notorious figures. Oracle's database programs have become integral to the Internet and other networked computer systems, and Oracle's head is convinced that he can surpass Microsoft as the industry leader. But he's also developed a reputation for his aggressive corporate tactics and personal flamboyance. Ellison agreed to cooperate with the project, but as part of the deal, he reserved the right to respond, which he does in a series of running footnotes. Sometimes he only uses the opportunity to mouth business platitudes, but he also refutes stories, cracks jokes and even argues with other sources. Although the book deals extensively with Oracle's efforts to promote a new software package, it comes to life most when it follows Ellison outside the office-prepping his sailboat for a run at the America's Cup or overseeing the final touches on a Japanese garden complex. Symonds's near-total access to his subject leads to intimate observations that verge on personal advice, as when the writer suggests how best to handle a top Oracle executive or comments on the relationship between Ellison and his two children. But he remains objective enough to point out several mistakes in the past management of Oracle (many of which Ellison acknowledges or clarifies). Even without its unusual counterpoint, the book would stand as a compelling portrayal of one of the computer industry's most influential leaders."

Fanning, Shawn
All the Rave: The Rise and Fall of Shawn Fanning's Napster
Menn, Joseph. ML 3790.M43 2003
From a Rolling Stone review:
During its brief, whirlwind existence, the file-sharing service Napster smashed rules, tweaked the establishment and allowed its 40 million users to pose as rebels while gorging on free music. Originally a dorm-room project of nineteen-year-old Shawn Fanning, Napster became an overnight sensation and a record-industry enemy before immolating like so many other one-hit wonders. Los Angeles Times reporter Joseph Menn tries to capture Napster's inside story in his new book, All the Rave, but his attempt at a rock & roll chronicle comes across more like Muzak. Wall Street Journal partisans who dig reading about the difference between Series A junior and Series C preferred stock in corporate ownership structures will appreciate Menn's well-reported business tale. But the just-the-facts approach seems to miss the essence of the excitement. For instance, the presumably "holy shit" moment when Fanning and his chat-room buddies realize that their software could doom the record business is summarized simply as "Shawn ... knew early on that they were pushing the legal envelope..."

Perfect Enough: Carly Fiorina and the Reinvention of
Hewlett-Packard
Anders, George. HD9696.A3U5144 2003
There is a brief review of this book in the March HBR (p.24) and both books were reviewed in the Feb. 17th issue of BusinessWeek. "Fresh from her triumph at Lucent, Carly Fiorina took command of Hewlett-Packard in July 1999. Ever since, there has been worldwide fascination with her eventual destiny. She was venturing further than any woman previously had into traditional men's territory. This wasn't just the engineer's realm of bits and bytes; this was the guys' world of beer blasts, rolled-up shirt sleeves, deer-hunting trips to the founders' ranch." "Could Fiorina use her charismatic salesmanship, earthy wit, and iron will to rescue a $40 billion company from a painful period of decline? If she failed, would her missteps destroy Hewlett-Packard, the revered computer and printer company that helped create Silicon Valley?" "Perfect Enough is the definitive account of the most dangerous year in Carly Fiorina's life, chronicling her daredevil bid to remake HP with a record-shattering $20 billion acquisition of archrival Compaq Computer. Not since the late 1980s - when Wall Street operatives battled over the fate of RJR Nabisco - has a takeover drama so decisively moved beyond the business pages to become an enduring passage in American history."

From the Boston Globe (Jan. 19): "In Who Says Elephants Can't Dance? Gerstner shares the story of how he led IBM's dramatic turnaround from moribund technology company to world leader. His tale begins when two IBM board members recruit Gerstner from his position as chief executive of RJR Nabisco. While neither an IBM veteran nor a technological genius, Gerstner accepts the job, believing that his years of management, leadership, and financial acumen can help revive this great company. His book (written without the aid of a ghostwriter, he points out) holds nothing back and reveals an eye for telling details. On his first day of work he finds the chief executive's office has no computer. Enough said. More to the point, Gerstner can't help but share awe and disappointment over what IBM was, and what it has become..."

Turnaround: How Carlos Ghosn Rescued Nissan
Magee, David. HD 9710.U54N555 2003

Nissan was on the brink and its future - like the rest of the auto industry - is still uncertain. The story of Brazilian-born Carlos Ghosn, the first Westerner to head a Japanese automaker, and his role in turning the company around, is interesting and instructive."

Grove, Andy
Andy Grove: The Life and Times of an American
BUSSTK HD9696.S44T588 2006
"In this highly readable but deliberately paced biography, Harvard professor and historian Tedlow (Giants of Enterprise) makes a case for Andy Grove (b. 1936) taking a place alongside Benjamin Franklin as a quintessential American businessman and citizen. Indeed, Grove rose from being a penniless Hungarian refugee to an engineer hired as Intel's third employee, eventually heading the corporation—"one of the most profitable companies in all of business history." Tedlow builds the book around a year-by-year, blow-by-blow account of Intel's ups and downs, punctuated by Grove's contemporaneous musings, drawn from his private notebooks. Following the company over the rocky patches in its trajectory from semiconductors to microprocessors, Tedlow situates Intel among its industry partners and competitors. Sometimes, there's too much context: the author conveys a good deal about Hungary's modern political history and scrutinizes every available scrap of information about his subject's childhood. There are also 20 pages on the 1994 Pentium "floating point flaw" debacle and 15 pages on Grove's battle with prostate cancer. But as a biography of Intel as well as a primer on Grove's writings and management philosophy, the book is truly illuminating. In offering a closeup portrait of this prickly but gifted executive, Tedlow helps us understand why Grove's tenure as Intel's CEO "was so spectacularly successful." [from Publishers Weekly]

“In 2005 during the National Hockey League's year-long lockout of North American teams, Calgary Flames' co-founder Harley Hotchkiss - chair of the league - met alone with Trevor Linden, president of the NHL Players' Association. The wisdom and honesty of the team owner, many decades older, helped influence the popular young centre to convince fellow players to settle the dispute. Harley has had that remarkable effect on people throughout his astonishing career in sports, business, and the community - a hat trick fulfilling his three goals in life. His absorbing memoir is an insider's guide to the development of North American hockey; the growth of the Canadian oil and gas industry witnessed by one of its most influential and individualistic entrepreneurs; and the behind-the-scenes story of enlightened philanthropy. Along the way, the Ontario tobacco-farmer's son tells of doing deals with the legendary Boone Pickens, going on safari with Swedish royalty, and becoming a partner with the mysterious Baron Carlo von Maffei.”

Author royalties from this book go to the Huntsman Cancer Foundation.  "The way Jon conducts his business and lives his life will not only inspire you to be a better person, citizen, and entrepreneur, it also will give you hope that the good guys don't finish last." Glenn Beck, CNN "Jon Huntsman is a different breed. He believes business is a creative endeavor, similar to a theater production, wherein integrity must be the central character." Larry King, CNN "Jon Huntsman's own life and personal values lend credence to his words. He walks his ethical talk." Neil Cavuto, Fox News "This book could put me out of business. Nobody would be happier about it than me." Wayne Reaud, Trial Attorney. The nationwide bestseller--fully updated for today's tough times and worldwide financial crises "Everyone does it." Everyone cheats. Cuts corners. Tells lies. Maybe it was different once. Not today. If you want to succeed in thiseconomic climate, you simply have to make compromises. Right? Wrong. You can succeed at the highest levels, without sacrificing the principles that make life worth living. The proof? You're holding it. Jon M.Huntsman built a $12 billion company from scratch, the old-fashioned way: with integrity. There were short-term costs and difficult decisions. There were tough times. Times just like today. But ultimately, leading with integrity wasn't just personally right for Huntsman, it also proved to be the best business strategy. In Winners Never Cheat, Huntsman tells you how he did it, and how you can, too. This book is about remembering why you work, and why you were chosen to lead. It's about finding the bravery to act on what you know is right, no matter what you're up against. It's about winning. The right way. Think about the kind of person you want to do business with. Then, be that person--and use this book to get you there.”
Utah State University announced that its College of Business would be re-named "The Jon M. Huntsman School of Business," in recognition of a gift from Jon and Karen Huntsman of $25 million—the largest in the university's history to that time.

Defying the Odds: Sharing the Lessons I Learned as a Pioneer Entrepreneur
HB 615.I75 2002
"Marcia Israel-Curley is the pioneering retail visionary behind Judy's, a fashion institution from the moment its first tiny store (7 feet wide and 12 feet deep!) opened in an offbeat Los Angeles neighborhood in 1948, until it was sold in 1989, as a major public company employing over 2000 people. It was called Judy's because the store was only wide enough for a sign with five letters, and it was the first boutique geared to clothing for young women, at a time when teenaged girls had to shop at large department stores and dress like their mothers. As Zsa Zsa Gabor said, "You had to shop Judy's twice each week or you missed great things!" Defying the Odds is a success story with a built-in course in retail entrepreneurship, the inspirational memoir of a self-made woman, and a moving tale of dedication and honesty. Marcia Israel-Curley is a remarkable role model with a wealth of experience and business acumen; her straightforward style makes her lessons for success an engaging and informative read. A lifetime of hard work and success has earned Marcia Israel-Curley many honors: in 1964 she was named Los Angeles Times Woman of the Year and was later designated Entrepreneur of the Year by the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California, where she is an adjunct professor; she chaired President Reagan's Committee for dealing with "Small and Minority Business Ownership" (reporting directly to the president) and she has been decorated by the U.S. Navy, and the president of France.

Beahm, George. HC102.5.J63J63 2011

Steve Jobs
Walter Isaacson.QA76.2.J63I722 2011

At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge, and when societies around the world are trying to build digital-age economies, Jobs stands as the ultimate icon of inventiveness and applied imagination. He knew that the best way to create value in the twenty-first century was to connect creativity with technology. He built a company where leaps of the imagination were combined with remarkable feats of engineering.

Although Jobs cooperated with this book, he asked for no control over what was written nor even the right to read it before it was published. He put nothing off-limits. He encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly. And Jobs speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about the people he worked with and competed against. His friends, foes, and colleagues provide an unvarnished view of the passions, perfectionism, obsessions, artistry, devilry, and compulsion for control that shaped his approach to business and the innovative products that resulted.

How it all began: Dr. Benjamin M. Nachman, a retired Omaha dentist and long-time Holocaust researcher, `discovered' David Kaufmann while interviewing a survivor for the Steven Spielberg Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation. In 1969, Rabbi Myer S. Kripke, who offciated at the funeral of Mr. David Kaufmann, learned that Mr. Kaufmann was "Mr. Grand Island" and that he had been, throughout his life, a role model for cherished Jewish values and had demonstrated that wealth is truly held only in stewardship. It is deeds, generosity and courage that counts!  David Kaufmann was born in Germany in 1875. He was educated and then began his professional life in merchandising and retail in Berlin, and other cities near Bonn and Cologne. At the age of 28, in 1903, he left Germany for America. He started working at A & S Department Store in Brooklyn, NY, but Mr. S.N.Wolbach, a Grand Island, Nebraska, merchant was so impressed by him that he encouraged him to come to Nebraska. And that was the beginning

HG 4910.L485 2002
"As stock prices and investor confidence have collapsed in the wake of Enron, WorldCom, and the dot-com crash, people want to know how this happened and how to make sense of the uncertain times to come.
Into the breach comes one of Wall Street's legendary investors, Leon Levy, to explain why the market so often confounds us, and why those who ought to understand it tend to get chewed up and spat out. Levy, who pioneered many of the innovations and investment instruments that we now take for granted, has prospered in every market for the past fifty years, particularly in today's bear market. In The Mind of Wall Street he recounts stories of his successes and failures to illustrate how investor psychology and willful self-deception so often play critical roles in the process. Like his peers George Soros and Warren Buffett, Levy takes a long and broad view of the rhythms of the markets and the economy. He also offers a provocative analysis of the spectacular Internet bubble, showing that the market has not yet completely recovered from its bout of "irrational exuberance."

Madsen, Axel. CT 274.F54M33 2002

"Like J. P. Morgan, John D. Rockefeller, and Andrew Carnegie, Marshall Field was one of the over of triumphant capitalism in the Gilded Age of the late nineteenth century. However, his phenomenal wealth and generous philanthropy masked a disastrous personal life. Deserted by his wife and alienated from his children, the founder of the Field dynasty left a legacy of immense wealth and misery to match. The Marshall Fields recounts the classic tale of Field’s spectacular success as well as the tragic story of a man who, while making millions by knowing what women wanted, had no inkling of his own wife’s emotional needs. This revealing account follows the next five generations of the Field family, concentrating on the most important and controversial figures in each generation. What emerges is a startling saga of money, madness, and mystery. From the son who may have been shot by a chorus girl to the great-great grandson who used his millions to create Hollywood fantasies, Field’s descendants have caromed wildly between rebellion and folly. Their story offers a new and penetrating take on wealth, success, and the nightmare that often accompanies the American dream."

“Born in 1919, Middleton is the youngest of six children. His father was a carpenter, and his mother was in one of the first graduating classes of what is now South Carolina State University. Middleton himself graduated from Clafin College, Orangeburg's predominantly black Methodist school, where his studies of sociology became the basis of his knack for understanding and communicating with different communities. A veteran of World War II, Middleton was trained as a Tuskegee Airman in 1942 and then served as an infantry soldier in the Pacific theater. Returning to Orangeburg in 1946, he became a barber and then a restaurant owner before finding his true vocation as a real-estate and insurance salesman. What is now one of the largest and most profitable real-estate firms in Orangeburg began as a sideline in the back of a barbershop, but Middleton quickly developed a reputation for superior knowledge and service.”

Le deal : how a Young American in Business, in Love, and in Over his Head, kick-started a Multibillion-dollar Industry in Europe
BUSSTK HD9940.E82M87 2008

“This mélange of memoir, travel-writing and business blueprint chronicles the author's attempt to set up shop in Europe after the catastrophic crash of his American business. Having mortgaged his house and other assets to finance his move to Paris, the author embarks on trying to interest Europeans in his scheme of shopping malls specializing in imperfect and off-season designer goods. He runs into unanticipated obstacles: a backlash against American developers due to the failure of Euro Disneyland, organized opposition from existing retailers, a national political movement against hypermarkets, complex zoning and property laws—not to mention his unfamiliarity with the French language and business customs. Murphy perseveres and manages to get several centers open—all of which are spectacular successes with shoppers and manufacturers. A slapdash collage of genres, the book also includes a mild thriller subplot concerning a rival development company and some even milder romance. While smoothly written, the book suffers from an unfocused narrative and the author's grating insistence in emphasizing his naïveté.”

The leadership of FDR transformed the most perilous years of the twentieth century into what many Americans regarded as their finest hour."

Siebert, Muriel
Changing the Rules: Adventures of a Wall Street Maverick
HG 4928.5.S58 2002
"Although Siebert isn't a household name, she's made waves in financial and political worlds, from the New York Stock Exchange to the Senate. Siebert's determination shines throughout this book; her experiences as the first woman to hold a seat on the NYSE and as the superintendent of banking for New York State have taught her much about working hard and taking advantage of lucky breaks. This slim volume contains more hard information about Wall Street than many popular books on financial planning for women, even if the authors, perhaps concerned about the average reader's ability to digest comments on airline stocks and financial laws, pepper many of the pages with simplistic success maxims (e.g., "Know a lot about a little" and "You've got to know the right questions to produce the right answers") in boldface type. The book is being published at a time when Wall Street's reputation is less than stellar, but Siebert, who's donated substantial time and money to charitable, educational and women's programs, adds some badly needed luster to its tarnished image."

Below: extract from a review by Marion Asnes in Money (Nov. 2002).
"Siebert began her pioneering career in the '50s as one of Wall Street's first female stock analysts, was the first woman to buy a seat on the New York Stock Exchange (in 1967), ran one of the first discount brokerages and became New York State's first female superintendent of banks in 1977. In the '90s, Muriel Siebert & Co. became one of the first brokerages to go online.
Along the way, she's worked with financial legends and lived through more than one bear market. She relishes revealing how Wall Street's sausage is made, and draws out the lessons she's learned in the true language of the financial district-colorful, funny and foul. (One keeper: "Don't get into a pissing contest with a skunk.") Siebert is the real deal, and this book is a great way to get to know her."

Farber, David. HD 9710.U52S494 2002
A few months back, we called your attention to this related book: McDonald, John. A Ghost's Memoir: The Making of Alfred P. Sloan's My Years With General Motors. (HD 9710.U54G47467 2002) Sloan's My Years with General Motors is well known in Business Schools and Bill Gates has argued that it is "probably the best book to read if you want to read only one book about business." The book was actually 'ghosted' by McDonald who was a writer for Fortune and this memoir reveals why and how General Motors tried for years to keep the book from being published. For additional information see these reviews: "He Wrote the Book: Why Did General Motors Try to Suppress the Memoir of its Own CEO"? by Gregg Easterbrook, in the New York Times Book Review, June 16, 2002; "Did GM Try to Squelch a Classic"? by Hardy Green, Business Week, June 3, 2002 and "Screw the Writer," in Across the Board, May/June 2002. McDonald died in 1999 and his obituary is found in the NYT, on Jan.4, 1999. (All of these resources are available to you electronically. Stern, Joel
Against the Grain: How to Succeed in Business
Stern, Joel M. and Irwin Ross. HG 4028.V3 S828 2003
"In Against the Grain, Joel Stern shares for the first time, not only the story of EVA implementation at many major companies, but the story behind the story-how he started the concept of EVA, found its earliest followers, and later turned the concept into a revolution. Stern shows today's business managers and executives how to affect change at the highest levels of management within any organization.

From the National Business Review (Dec.5):
"Joel Stern's "business memoir" will be a worthwhile read for consultants; it's a gold mine of tips on pitching to corporates and handling their accounts. Stern recounts his travels on five continents "crusading against the shibboleths and distortions of accounting practices) and preaching the gospel of EVA (economic value added) to anyone prepared to listen. Part travelogue, part biography, and part corporate finance treatise, the book is an easy read, although the stories are getting a little dated.
The local angle is chapter six in which he recounts, albeit briefly, his experience from 1993 with Fletcher Challenge. The company "was no EVA success story" because, the 62-year-old Stern recalls, while chairman Sir Ron Trotter was a fan, chief executive Hugh Fletcher was not, preferring Boston Consulting Group's rival CFROI (cash flow return on investment) programme. For someone who has spent a lifetime studying corporate finance and management, Stern is a decidedly colourful character."

From the Financial Times (Nov.13)
"The heresy of a free market missionary - BOOK REVIEW AGAINST THE GRAIN - Joel Stern prompted a small revolution in financial thinking by blending academic rigour with a salesman's zeal writes Jane Fuller. It seems like an easy option to read a business autobiography rather than a self-improving book on the workings of companies or markets."

In Sam We Trust : The Untold Story of Sam Walton and How Wal-Mart is Devouring America
Bob Ortega. HF5429.215.U6O78 1998.
Bob Ortega, a Veteran Wall Street Journal reporter who has covered Wal-Mart more extensively than perhaps any other writer, has investigated Wal-Mart and the way it does business. He shows how the company's relentless bottom-line mentality has been both a boon and a bane to workers and their communities.

Slater, Robert
The Wal-Mart Decade: How a New Generation of Leaders Turned Sam Walton's Legacy into the World's #1 Company
HF 5465.U64W357 2003
"Since Sam Walton's death in 1992, Wal-Mart has grown into one of the world's largest and most controversial companies. Slater's latest (after The Eye of the Storm: How John Chambers Steered Cisco Through the Technology Collapse) delivers an insider's look at the retailer's meteoric rise. Wal-Mart's secret to success is well-known: by selling products for less, the firm makes less profit per product, but is able to sell more products and keep inventories low. This strategy brought the company incredible success before Walton's death, but Wal-Mart had yet to hit its real growth spurt. It was doing $43.8 billion in sales in 1992. Just three years later, under CEO David Glass, sales hit $100 billion. Glass "took Wal-Mart out of Middle America and made it into a global brand," explains Slater. He shows how Glass and his colleagues stayed true to Walton's idiosyncratic management style while investing in the technologies and logistics operations that a multibillion-dollar company needs. Slater saves some of the most compelling chapters for the book's end, when he describes how the firm is besieged by legions of bankrupt small-business owners, muckraking journalists and, of course, lawyers. Slater reports Wal-Mart is the most sued entity in the U.S. "I don't know how things happened," says Glass, "but you suddenly become a target rather than everybody's favorite." Thanks to his access to top executives, Slater shows how Wal-Mart survived (by beefing up its PR department) and thrived (grabbing the top spot on the 2002 Fortune 500 list).

"More than an autobiography, CitiGroup CEO and renowned philanthropist Weill delivers an ambitious project that spans more than 50 years of business history and provides real-world advice for investment neophytes and market insiders alike. Weill, a Brooklyn native, started his career in 1960 with a $30,000 loan and a dream, and slowly created an empire; at present, CitiGroup is the largest financial institution in the world, its share price having grown 2,644% since its initial public offering in 1986 (when it was known as Commercial Credit). An inspiring story told with subtlety and candor, Weill's memoir offers something for everyone-from his ten golden rules of leadership to a first-hand explication of the 1990s bull-bear battles on Wall Street, and a candid interview with his wife Joan (complete with her advice for the "Corporate Spouse"). At times emotional and self-congratulatory, this book's purpose is always clear-to celebrate and enshrine Weill's successes. Nonetheless, it also includes salient criticism, and some painful explication of his mistakes along the way. Like the man himself, this book tells it like it is, and has little to hide." Wilson, Joe
Joe Wilson and the Creation of Xerox
Ellis, Charles HD 9802.3.U64X474 2006
From Publishers Weekly
"Transforming family-owned Haloid Corp., which struggled in the shadow of hometown behemoth Eastman Kodak, into the globally recognized Xerox is an amazing accomplishment. But as Ellis's biography of Joe Wilson attests, Wilson's achievements ranged more widely and went much deeper than many gave him credit for. Ellis, author of 11 books and former financial industry consultant offers a heartfelt, if not artful, telling of the CEO's life story. He contends that Wilson embodied all of the qualities that leadership management books celebrate: integrity, foresight and the ability to inspire people to perform. He credits these attributes to helping Wilson so spectacularly realize his vision for his company; its employees; his alma mater, the University of Rochester; and the city and people of Rochester, N.Y. Ellis's telling starts off slow and is initially quite repetitive. But once Xerox is finally born, after years of setbacks, the story picks up. The real purpose for the detailed buildup appears toward the end, when credit for the last 20-odd years of corporate strife and ultimate success is given to the wrong person, Wilson's best friend and the company's corporate counsel. At that point, it becomes clear why Ellis was compelled to write this book so long after the company's rise and its true founder's demise."

1,000 Dollars and an Idea : Entrepreneur to Billionaire
BUSSTK
HC102.5.W95W95 2008
“Country boy makes good in this down-home tale of self-made multimillionaire Wyly. In his humble post-Depression Louisiana roots, Wyly learned his first business lessons from football strategy, his father's tiny newspaper business and his mother's bargaining skills. A lucky meeting propelled him to the University of Michigan's Business School and his first corporate job at IBM, where he had to work fast to keep from succumbing to culture shock as he discovered there ain't no Bubbas in Michigan. Energetic and restless, he soon left IBM for Honeywell and then created his own technology companies, rescuing failing businesses, founding Green Mountain Energy and devoting himself to environmentalism. Citing Sam Walton as a hero and Ross Perot as a personal friend, Wyly stresses the power and privilege of self-creation and speaks honestly about what he's learned: that failure is crucial to achieving success, independent thought is imperative, luck serendipitous and power useless unless it is wielded for good. Though the message is a good one, the meandering storytelling and not well-known author might make this book a hard sell to a trade audience.”

COLLECTIVE WORKS

Often biographical profiles come in the form of essays buried in collective works. Below we provide a list of such books. In some cases we have indicated who is profiled in the work and in others you may be able to see which biographical profiles are provided by clicking on the link.

In 2003 Wahib Nasrallah published a very useful book: United States Entrepreneurs and the Companies They Built: An Index to Biographies in Collective Works. The book identifies over 1700 biographies from 120 collective works and matches the biographical sketch to the book. We used that book to help gather this list. If you are trying to determine if a business person has been profiled in a collection, consult Nasrallah's book where an alphabetical list of biographical subjects is provided.

Good Guys and Bad Guys : Behind the Scenes with the Saints and Scoundrels of American Business

Nocera, Joseph  (HC102.5.A2N63 2008 )
“A fascinating collection of profiles by one of America’s leading business journalists.
For three decades, in major publications such as Texas Monthly, Esquire, Fortune, and now The New York Times, Joe Nocera has reported on the people who dominate the business world, for better or worse. Everyone from Warren Buffett to T. Boone Pickens to George Steinbrenner to Ken Lay has fallen under his microscope.
Now, in this collection of his best work, he explores how we define good guys and bad guys in business and concludes that things are often not what they seem.
It turns out that there are surprisingly good qualities in classic villains like junk bond king Michael Milken and notorious stock analyst Henry Blodget. And some business celebrities who are widely admired, such as Steve Jobs, are not quite the good guys they appear to be on the surface.
Good Guys and Bad Guys also offers a fresh perspective on some of today’s biggest controversies, such as global warming, Apple’s iPhone, CEO compensation, the tobacco industry, short sellers, and much more.”

In Their Time: The Greatest Business Leaders of the Twentieth Century
Anthony J.Mayo & Nitin Nohria. (BUSSTK HD38.25.V6.M32 2005)
Great business leaders possess more than celebrated traits like charisma and an appetite for risk. They have "contextual intelligence"--a profound ability to understand the Zeitgeist of their times and harness it to create successful organizations. Based on a comprehensive Harvard Business School Leadership Initiative study, Anthony J. Mayo and Nitin Nohria present a fascinating collection of stories of the 20th century's greatest leaders, from unsung heroes to legends like Sam Walton and Bill Gates. The book identifies three distinct paths these individuals followed to greatness: entrepreneurial innovation, savvy management, and transformational leadership. Through engaging stories of leaders in each category, the authors show how, by "reading" the context they operated in and embracing the opportunities their times presented, these individuals created, grew, or revitalized outstanding American enterprises. A canon of leadership success from the last century, In Their Time reveals insights for contemporary leaders hoping to build lasting legacies.

Upward Bound: Nine Original Accounts of How Business Leaders Reached Their Summits
Useem, Michael, Jerry Useem, and Paul Asel (HF5386.U54 2003)
From Publishers Weekly
"This collection of essays from nine executives who are also experienced mountain climbers shows the similarities between this extreme sport and the business world. Certain qualities-patience, perseverance, a talent for teamwork-are important in both the boardroom and the outdoors. Contributors include Michael Useem (the director of Center For Leadership and Change at Wharton), Jerry Useem (a senior writer at Fortune), Asel (a venture capital advisor), Jim Collins (author of the bestseller Good to Great), Stacy Allison (one of the most experienced woman mountain climbers) and Al Read (the executive vice chairman of Geographic Expeditions); essays focus on their authors' mountain experiences, analyzing the decisions and challenges of their more difficult adventures. Reviewing a failed effort to climb the Himalayas, for example, Allison writes that "a leader's job in such an extreme setting is to balance drive with caution, but it's every climber's responsibility to recognize the true limits of survival-to know just how far you can push yourself before inviting disaster." She goes on to suggest that "many companies have also faced much the same consequences when dealing with the absence of a strong leadership team at the top." The other contributors all share Allison's belief that the skills and confidence that are critical to their success as climbers are equally important in the business arena. This book will appeal to hard-charging, type-A readers who are dedicated both to their professions and to their individual athletic pursuits. The essays preach essentially the same message about teamwork, loyalty, hard work and commitment, though, and the mountain climbing stories compel far more than the business lessons."
