Facebook and Twitter: Implications for Business

Facebook has recently become the most popular social networking site on the Internet with over 200 million users worldwide logging in more than 100 million logins per day according to Facebook Statistics.

There are many predictions that Facebook will become the new Google, with global traffic increasing daily and Facebook directing 150 million people to Google. Analysts at the World Advertising Research Centre believe that Facebook could become the new "starting point for web users, threatening Google's current position."

Some Facebook facts:

  • Fastest-growing crowd on Facebook is a new one, women over 55
  • The female 55+ demo grew by 175% in the past 120 days
  • 45% of Facebook's audience is over the age of 26
  • Teenagers make up just 12% of the Facebook crowd

McKinsey Quarterly recently commented that, " Surging popularity of online social networking is transforming the nature of business networking, with profound implications for the way business people manage their careers."

The Economist agrees, but heeds a warning to those using Facebook to complain about their jobs or companies. While Facebook has great marketing potential, it can also be a " source of damaging publicity, as British Airways and Virgin Atlantic have discovered to their cost. Virgin fired 13 of its cabin crew who had posted derogatory comments about its safety standards and some of its passengers on a Facebook forum."
