GEERT HOFSTEDE (1928 - )

"The importance of Hofstede's work cannot be overestimated". Thus begins the brief commentary "The Work of Geert Hofstede" which is found in Cultural Metaphors: Reading, Research Translations and Commentary, by Martin J. Gannon. Hofstede is well-known for providing a theoretical framework that attempts to analyze the relationships between organizational actions and cultural beliefs. Since the references to Hofstede's works are numerous and scattered across a variety of disciplines the purpose of this brief bibliography is to direct you quickly to material found in the Western Libraries that will help you assess the work of Hofstede - particularly in the context of management theory and international business operations. Listed below are books and articles by Geert Hofstede as well as some suggestions as to how to find out more about the way in which his works are interpeted by other scholars. The following abstract, describing the basic contents of the book, was found in Organization Studies, Vol. 16, No.4, 1995.

This is a collection of seventeen previously published articles dealing with (1);the impact of jobs on people, (2) power and control in organizations, and (3) studies in training sessions. In the first part, three cases and three statistical studies show the general connections between job structure, talent, education and motivation. The author concludes that the impact of work on people strongly depends on the individual education and that the 'humanization of work' is deeply connected with questions of power, hierarchy and resistance to change. Three articles and three case studies deal with political processes and power in organizations, including attempts to change power relationships, alienation problems in he top management, and alternatives to traditional budget systems maintaining control of non-routine processes. Five case studies, in Part 3, provide insights about trainees, their relationships with superiors, the structure and role distribution, and the effects and effectiveness of training programmes.

This abstract was taken from ProQuest.
