Bibliography - Peter C. Newman

Peter C. Newman: A Bibliography

Peter C. Newman has been called the "Jacques Cousteau of the Canadian corporate aquarium" and over many years has produced numerous books and articles about the major figures in Canadian business  and political history. For this reason the staff members in the C.B. “Bud” Johnston Library have compiled a bibliography of works by Peter C. Newman and  are making  it available to students who are researching Canadian business history generally and who are interested in  Newman specifically. The bibliography consists of three sections:

  1. The first provides an alphabetical list of books by Peter C. Newman that are available in the University of Western Ontario Libraries. In many cases, we also provide sources indicating where the books are reviewed.
  1. The second section lists articles written by Mr. Newman for the National Post and  other newspapers and magazines.
  2. The last section provides citations to articles written by Newman for Maclean's from 2011 to 1986. There are over 700 of them and the list may not be complete.

1950s – 2011

Peter Newman is prolific and continues to produce. Two new books have arrived early in 2011: Heroes: Canadian Champions, Dark Horses and Icons and Mavericks: Canadian Rebels, Renegades and Anti-Heroes. For a review of these books and a positive appraisal of Newman see: “Canada’s Other Boswell,” by Thomas Axworthy, The Globe and Mail, Jan. 1, 2011. As well, articles continue to arrive and there are sure to be plenty more since it is highly likely that Mr. Newman will have much to say about the upcoming federal election in May 2011.

When we originally began this bibliography several years ago we hoped to be able to use it to entice Mr. Newman to deposit here at Western all of his papers and the research he has gathered about very important Canadians over the last 60 years. We came close to doing so, but ultimately failed and many of his papers now reside at his alma mater, the University of Toronto. Perhaps someone there will continue to monitor Mr. Newman’s production. We will no longer be updating this bibliography as of April 2011.

Izzy The Passionate Life and Turbulent Times of Izzy Asper, Canada' s Media Mogul
P92.5.A86N49 2008
“Canada's blockbuster political commentator, author of Here Be Dragons and The Secret Mulroney Tapes, tells the epic, unauthorized life story of a Canadian media giant Izzy Asper was a true visionary and a self-made billionaire. In the kind of intimate detail that made his other books mega bestsellers, Peter C. Newman profiles one of the most charismatic and powerful Canadian tycoons of the past quarter century. A serial risk-taker with a fever in his blood, the always controversial Asper grew a tiny television station, operated out of a converted supermarket, into the CanWest empire. Under Asper's guidance, CanWest became Canada's most profitable television network, one that comprised Global Television, and more than 60 newspapers--including the National Post--and was run mainly out of Izzy's briefcase from his beloved hometown of Winnipeg. Izzy was the quintessential entrepreneur, constantly in flight and flux, each of his improbable ventures feeding on the next. Only his family occupied higher ground than his business interests, yet he combined the joys of home life with his killer instincts at work. Both were essential to his character. In the end, Izzy Asper was addicted as much to the game as to its rewards. What made him so special was his ability to create warm, electric moments among his friends and loyalists, yet inspire fear in his critics and enemies. Izzy is Canadian business history at its best, a masterful portrait of the man who was, for decades, the country's leading media mogul”.
