Articles

  • Covers the history and culture of the United States and Canada from prehistoric times to the present.  This bibliographic database provides citations and abstracts of articles, books, and dissertations, as well as link-outs to full text.  In many cases, embedded full text is supplied.  From 1989 onward, the database also includes citations to reviews of films, videos, and non-print media.
  • Provides abstracts to dissertations and scholarly articles and books on world history (excluding the history of Canada and the United States; see America: History and Life, above) from 1450 to the present.  This bibliographic database provides link-outs to full text; in many cases, embedded full text is supplied.  Coverage includes all branches of world history: political; diplomatic; military; economic; social; cultural; religious; and intellectual. The database also covers the history of science, technology, and medicine.
  • Provides bibliographic data on historical writing dealing with the British Isles, as well as with the British Empire and Commonwealth, during all periods for which written documentation is available:  55 BC to the present.   BBIH is the online successor to the Royal Historical Society Bibliography of British and Irish History.

    As well as providing details of publications, BBIH provides links to online catalogues to help locate items found in research libraries in North America, Britain, and Ireland, and provides links to online text where available.
  • Offers a global look at history with content from Africa, Asia, North and South America, Europe and the Middle East. This database contains cover-to-cover full text for more than 140 titles, including many peer-reviewed journals. Full text dates as far back as 1964. These sources cover a wide range of historical topics including anthropology, art, culture, economics, government, heritage, military, politics, regional issues, and more. In addition to the full text, indexing and abstracts are provided for all journals in the collection.

Biographies

  • The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography is an illustrated collection of 57,000+ specially written biographies of the men and women who shaped all aspects of the history of the British Isles and beyond from the earliest times to 2006. The online version is updated three times a year. This resource is also available in print at DBW reference DA28.O95 2004.
  • The Dictionary of Canadian Biography Online presents biographies of individuals whose death or last known activity occurred in the years from 1000 to 1930. The biographies include those from all walks of life, different ethnic groups, and all regions of Canada. The biographies represent a range of professions and occupations---business people, artists, politicians, nurses, judges, physicians, soldiers, athletes, lawyers, poets, farmers, workers, clerics, and entertainers.   • The American National Biography provides a comprehensive examination of the diversity of the men and women who have in some way shaped the history of the United States. The database features over 18,300 biographies, including the 17,435 original biographies from the print edition. Three times a year new biographies are added and others are revised. The American National Biography entries are cross-reference linked to counterpart entries in Oxford Dictionary of National Biography , which permits comparisons of subjects in their American and British contexts.  Also available in print, DBW reference CT213.A65 1999
  • The Dictionary of Irish Biography is the most comprehensive and authoritative biographical dictionary published for Ireland.  It contains 9,014 signed biographical articles which describe and assess the careers of subjects in all fields of endeavour, including politics, law, religion, literature, journalism, architecture, painting, music, and medicine.  Entries include prominent men and women born in Ireland, north and south, as well as the noteworthy Irish careers of those born outside Ireland.  Articles range from 200 to 15,000 words, from short summaries to detailed assessments.  The chronological coverage extends from earliest times to 2002.  All entrants in DIB are deceased.

  • Contains scholarly biographies of persons who were significant in Australian history.  Print version is located in DBW stack DU 82.A87.
  • Includes 10,000 articles containing biographical information on individual women from around the world, both living and dead. In some cases only birth, marriage, children, and death dates are known; articles vary in length according to the subject.   Many entries contain photographs, and Volume 1 includes genealogical tables of the royalty from various countries and times.

Encyclopedias

  • Oxford Reference Online Premium (OROP) offers a huge range of fully-indexed, up-to-date, and cross-searchable dictionaries, language references, and subject reference works published by Oxford University Press.  The collection includes detailed information across a broad range of subject disciplines.
  • Britannica Online Academic, a classic reference source, provides access to multiple resources from one location, delivering search results with a range of content including encyclopedia articles, multimedia, related Web sites and magazines. This resource also includes Merriam-Webster's pop-up Dictionary and Thesaurus, as well as automatic citations that appear at the bottom of each article.

  • The Canadian Encyclopedia provides the most comprehensive, objective and accurate information on Canada for students, readers and scholars across Canada and throughout the world. More than 5000 scholars and specialists from every discipline and from every region of Canada have generously contributed their expertise to this publication.
  • Provides an exhaustive and organized overview of Jewish life and knowledge from the Second Temple period to the contemporary State of Israel, from Rabbinic to modern Yiddish literature, from Kabbalah to "Americana" and from Zionism to the contribution of Jews to world cultures, Encyclopaedia Judaica, 2nd edition is important to scholars, general readers and students.   • This update to the original Dictionary of the History of Ideas is "designed to introduce a general audience to the main ideas and movements of global cultural history from antiquity to the twenty-first century." This is an entirely new work rather than a mere revision, featuring more than twice as many articles as the original written by over 550 contributors. - Taken from Booklist.  Available in print, DBW reference CB5.D52 2005.  The first edition, published in 1974, is available in print and online.

Government Information

  • This key database indexes information produced by or relating to the U.S. Congress from 1789 to the present. Western Libraries acquired the retrospective content module covering 1824-1979, and so has access to the full text of Congressional Research Service reports from 1916 to the present, Congressional Hearings from 1824 to 2003, Committee Prints from 1830 to 2003, and Serial Set Collection with Maps from 1789 to 1969.

    The database also provides full text for many titles (generally from the early 1990s to the present), including bills, laws, legislative histories, committee prints, House and Senate documents and reports, the Congressional Record, the Code of Federal Regulations, and the Federal Register.

  • Canadian Research Index/Microlog indexes a massive set of microfiche located on the lower level in The D.B. Weldon Library, DBW govt mfiche CA7 MC M32. It covers monographs and annual publications of lasting reference value from Canadian government and institutional sources. Federal, provincial, and municipal levels of government are covered. At the federal level, both depository and non-depository publications are included. It includes scientific and technical reports, statistical reports, policy papers, and annual reports.
  • The parliamentary papers encompass all areas of social, political, economic and foreign policy, showing how issues were explored and legislation was formed. Sessional papers (sometimes called 'blue books') were required for the work of the House of Commons to provide information on matters of policy and administration, and they include documents classified as Bills, House Papers, and Command Papers. HCCP also includes those Papers of the House of Lords presented to the House of Commons, such as reports prepared by Lords Select Committees. HCPP does not include debates (Hansard), the House of Commons Journal, or daily business papers, such as Order Papers and Votes and Proceedings. HCPP covers 1800 – present. The D.B. Weldon Library owns the sessional papers from 1731 – 1800 on microcard, DBW govt UK1 PA B67.
  • AccessUN contains the full-text of several thousand UN documents. This resource indexes virtually every document from the main UN agencies: General Assembly, Security Council, Secretariat and the International Court of Justice. It contains Official Records, masthead documents, draft resolutions, meeting records, UN Sales Publications, and the UN Treaty Series citations. Includes documents from 1951 to the present.

Web Sites

  • The Center for Research Libraries (CRL) is an international consortium of university, college, and independent research libraries, based in Chicago, Ill.

    CRL acquires and preserves newspapers, journals, documents, archives, and other traditional and digital resources from a global network of sources.  Most of the materials acquired are from outside the United States; many are from emerging regions of the world, including Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and Latin America.

    CRL facilitates member institutions to provide students, faculty, and other researchers access to these rich source materials via interlibrary loan and electronic delivery.   Western Libraries has been a member of CRL since July 2007.


  • Archives Canada is a gateway to archival resources found in over 800 repositories across Canada.  Through Archives Canada, it is possible to search archival holdings across Canada, access provincial and territorial archival networks, view digitized photographs, maps, documents and online exhibits developed around Canada's history, browse digital projects produced through the Archival Community Digitization Progra, and find contact information for repositories where these resources are held.

    Archival descriptions and digitized products are added regularly.  Archives Canada is an official archival portal maintained by the Canadian Council of Archives (CCA), and is a joint initiative of CCA, provincial and territorial archival networks, and Library and Archives Canada. All archival descriptions and links contained in the searchable database are provided by provicincial and territorial councils, their members, and Library and Archives Canada.

  • NiCHE brings together historians, geographers, and other researchers who study nature and humans in Canada's past. We offer a forum for the field, support collaboration among scholars, and ensure that this research is shared with policymakers, scientists, and the Canadian public. Understanding today's environment demands a clear understanding of its past. Unless environmental matters are studied in their historical context, there can be no measurement of relative change. NiCHE is a confederation of researchers and educators working at the intersection of nature and history who seek to provide that context.  Offers site information in English and French.
  • Provides access to historical documents from Western Europe that are transcribed, reproduced in facsimile, or translated. Most are primary documents that shed light on key historical happenings within the respective countries. Includes documents on Medieval and Renaissance Europe, and on Europe as a supernational region; provides access to documents worldwide.
  • Digital library containing selected core printed primary and secondary sources for the medieval and modern history of the British Isles. Source materials covering administrative and legal history; ecclesiastical and religious history; economic history; intellectual, scientific and cultural history; parliamentary history; urban and metropolitan history.
