  • GeoBase is a bibliographic database of the global literature in earth science, ecology, geography and marine science. Broad subject coverage and the range of sources abstracted make this an ideal tool for searching multidisciplinary topics such as environmental or geographical studies and other areas that cross traditional subject boundaries.
  • Scopus contains over 27 million records (back to 1966) covering articles from 14,200 peer-reviewed titles, including international publishers. Subject coverage includes: Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Engineering; Life and Health Sciences; Social Sciences, Psychology and Economics; Biological, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; and General Sciences.
  • Web of Science contains searchable author abstracts from 1,700 major journals across a broad range of disciplines in the social sciences, sciences and arts & humanities. This database also covers individually selected, relevant items from more than 3,400 of the world's leading natural and physical science journals. Each Web of Science database includes the article's cited reference list (often called its bibliography). This unique feature allows searches for articles that cite a known author of work.
  • Searches ProQuest Dissertations and Theses — Full text  and ProQuest Dissertations & Theses UK and Ireland, and Dissertations and Theses at University of Western Ontario.

    ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Full Text is the world's most comprehensive database of dissertations and theses published in North America and provides full-text access to most of the disseratations added since 1997 and strong retrospective coverage for older graduate works.

    ProQuest Dissertations & Theses UK and Ireland provides access to abstracts of disseratations published in the UK and Ireland.

  • A freely accessible research database focusing on the relationship between human beings and the environment, with well-researched but accessible information on topics ranging from global warming to recycling to alternate fuel sources and beyond. Comprised of scholarly and general interest titles, as well as government documents and reports, GreenFILE offers a unique perspective on the positive and negative ways humans affect the ecology. Drawing on the connection between the environment and disciplines such as agriculture, education, law, health and technology, GreenFILE will serve as an informative resource for anyone concerned about the issues facing our planet
  • Canadian Research Index/Microlog indexes a massive set of microfiche located on the lower level in The D.B. Weldon Library, DBW govt mfiche CA7 MC M32. It covers monographs and annual publications of lasting reference value from Canadian government and institutional sources. Federal, provincial, and municipal levels of government are covered. At the federal level, both depository and non-depository publications are included. It includes scientific and technical reports, statistical reports, policy papers, and annual reports.
  • This is a collection of monograph publications from Canadian public policy institutes, government agencies, advocacy groups, think-tanks, university research centers and other public interest groups. N.B. An additional plugin is required to view content in this database - be sure to download the ebrary Reader. This resource is provided courtesy of the G.   • PAIS International is a bibliographic index to the literature of public policy, social policy, and the social sciences in general. It indexes journal articles; books; government documents; statistical compilations; committee reports; directories; serials; reports of public, intergovernmental, and private organizations; and most other forms of printed literature from all over the world.

  • EconLit is a comprehensive, indexed bibliography with selected abstracts of the world's economic literature, produced by the American Economic Association. It includes coverage of over 400 major journals as well as articles in collective volumes (essays, proceedings, etc.), books, book reviews, dissertations, and working papers licensed from the Cambridge University Press Abstracts of Working Papers in Economics.
  • PubMed is an international bibliographic database of over 4500 biomedical journals. It covers the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system and the preclinical sciences from 1966 to the present. Topics in Health and Environment are selectively covered here.
  • Google Scholar provides access to the scholarly literature in many disciplines, however, because it draws its information from unknown sources, it can miss alot of important publications and retreive alot of irrelevant and redundant material. It's best to use Google Scholar as a starting point and in addition to other library research databases.

Maps

  • The Map and Data Centre Catalogue provides access to 222,000 sheet maps, providing global coverage at a variety of scales. This includes all current paper versions of Canadian federal topographic maps at 1:50,000 and
    1:250,000 and all hydrographic charts for Canadian waters. In addition, the catalogue provides access to over 2,000 atlases in both paper and digital formats, covering a wide range of themes and areas.

  • This GIS portal will allow access to selected large scale geospatial datasets owned and licensed by Ontario institutions.  Sophisticated search, discovery and analysis tools will make vector and raster data readily available to you at your fingertips.  The data can be exported in a number of popular formats, including as a shapefile, DWG, DXF, GeoTiff, and MrSID.

News Sources

  • Canadian Newsstand Major Dailies offers full text access to articles, columns, editorials and feature articles from many leading Canadian news sources.  Following a two-day embargo period, the content is updated daily.
  • A comprehensive resource providing full-text documents from over 5,600 news, business, legal, medical and reference publications. Areas of interest include: U.S. and International newspapers, wire services, broadcast transcripts, and non-English language sources.
  • This is a comprehensive full-text database of the newspapers, magazines and journals of the ethnic, minority and native press.  While the content may mirror mainstream media coverage, the viewpoints are unique.
  • This is a full-text database of more than 170 interdisciplinary newspapers, magazines and journals from alternative and independent press.  It provides a valuable source of viewpoints and perspectives to complement and challenge the coverage of the mainstream media.
  • An online resource to a variety of historical newspapers, offering full-text and full-image articles for newspapers dating back to the 19th century.  For most titles, the collection includes digital reproductions of every page from every issue, cover to cover, in downloadable PDF files.

Statistics and Data

  • An interactive database containing articles from Canadian Social Trends and the latest edition of the Canada Year Book. Also includes Canadian social and economic data from the CANSIM database, as well as current and historical Census data dating back to 1665.
  • The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations leads international efforts to defeat hunger. Serving both developed and developing countries, FAO acts as a neutral forum where all nations meet as equals to negotiate agreements and debate policy.
  • Statistical country profiles; international comparative statistics on agriculture & food, globalization, health data, employment, international development, revenue, and more.
  • UNDP Statistics allows you to access statistical data from the Human Development Report (HDR) and links you to resources that help you better understand this data. You will also find helpful information about the human development index (HDI) and other indices, links to other background materials, data resources and on-going debates and discussions on human development statistics.
