Finding Books in the Catalogue

Searching the Library Catalogue

The library catalogue indexes books and the location of journals, but not the articles within the journals. The catalogue points to information both in print and in electronic formats.

From the Western Libraries website, select "catalogue" which is on the grey horizontal bar. From the catalogue, you can search by:

  • Keyword - searches words throughout the entire record
  • Title - searches the title only, and must be precise
  • Journal Title - searches for journal titles, and must be precise
  • Author - searches for authors only
  • Subject Heading - searches through subject headings
  • Medical Subject Heading - searches medical subject headings
  • Call Number - searches the call number only
  • ISBN - searches the International Standard Book Number
  • ISSN - searches the International Standard Serial Number
  • Publisher Number - searches the publisher number
  • Gov't Doc Number - searches the government document number
  • Other Number - e.g. National Bibliography Control Number

Unless you know specifically what book you are interested in, you will probably mostly use the Keyword search or the Subject Heading search.

  • The keyword search searches the entire record, including the Table of Contents
  • Subject headings provide categories that you can browse through, to find other related books. If you type in a concept into the Subject Heading search, you can browse that subject or related subjects to find books.

The catalogue has the following features:

  • You can limit your search to a specific library
  • You can sort by date
  • You can limit your search by clicking on limit/sort search
  • You can request books that are already being borrowed by another patron
  • You can request a book be delivered to the Western Libraries library of your choice
  • You can drop off a Western Libraries book at any Western Libraries library

Tips for Searching the Catalogue for Healthcare Industry Books

Note the spelling of the word health care versus healthcare. Both variations of this word might be used in items in the catalogue. If you do a keyword search, you need to try both variations because the results will only retrieve exactly what you type into the search box. Therefore, searching for health care will not retrieve results with healthcare in it, and vice versa.

If you do a subject search, you will notice that healthcare is not a subject category. However, the catalogue points you to medical care, which is the used subject term in the catalogue. This is a good illustration of the benefit of subject terms. The use of synonyms (e.g. healthcare versus medical care) or spelling differences (e.g. health care versus healthcare) means that you search might capture relevant books you might not have otherwise found.

Some Subject Heading search terms that you might find useful include:

  • Biotechnology
  • Biotechnology Industries
  • Biotechnology Industries - Canada
  • Biotechnology Industries - Canada - Directories
  • Health (you'll notice several related subjects here)
  • Hospital care
  • Medical care
  • Medical care, cost of
  • Pharmaceutical Biotechnology Industry
  • Pharmaceutical industry
