  • This comprehensive database covers journals specific to Communication and Mass Media studies and relevant content from publications in other fields discussing issues related to communication and mass media topics.
    The Faculty of Information and Media Studies at UWO kindly provides access to this resource.

  • Communication Abstracts is a comprehensive source of information about communication-related publications on a world-wide scale. Coverage includes articles, reports, chapters and books from a variety of publishers, research institutions and information sources. Literature from other disciplines relevant to communication research is also included.

  • General database indexing publications across all subject areas.  Often includes links to full text and also links to Western Libraries holdings.

  • Simultaneously search 29 ProQuest social science databases including Sociological Abstracts, PsycInfo and Worldwide Political Science Abstracts.

News Sources

  • Full-text access to major Canadian daily newspapers including The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star, The Calgary Herald and the Vancouver Sun.

  • A comprehensive resource providing full-text documents from over 5,600 news, business, legal, medical and reference publications. Areas of interest include: U.S. and International newspapers, wire services, broadcast transcripts, and non-English language sources.

  • This database provides access to news from over 8,000 sources, from 118 countries in 22 languages. There are 96 Canadian publications, including The Globe & Mail, Toronto Star and National Post. Extensive company and industry search capabilities are also available. An excellent Help Guide, produced by the Business Library is available.

  • This is a full-text database of more than 170 interdisciplinary newspapers, magazines and journals from alternative and independent press.  It provides a valuable source of viewpoints and perspectives to complement and challenge the coverage of the mainstream media.

  • This is a comprehensive full-text database of the newspapers, magazines and journals of the ethnic, minority and native press.  While the content may mirror mainstream media coverage, the viewpoints are unique.

Statistics and Data

  • Statistics Canada news releases on current social and economic conditions such as most recent unemployment rates, consumer price index, voting patterns, etc.

  • Provides access to access to free statistics from official sources on the web arranged by country, region or subject. (maintained by staff at the University of Auckland Library, Auckland, N.Z.)

  • This site provides a source for news, research, commentary, advice, discussion and resources. It also includes an expanding database of award-winning Canadian journalism, and links to other organizations that recognize and support excellence in journalism.

  • An collection of over 9,500 websites of interest to journalists, including access to story ideas, research resources, job search assistance, reporting techniques and editing/fact checking resources. A Recent Updates area and links to timely topics in the media is also included.

  • A project of the Center for Media and Public Affairs, this site offers "the news behind the scenes".  It provides commentary on the factors that shape the news and points out examples of inaccuracies, sloppiness and bias in reporting.
