Classic Texts

  • Harrison's online is the frequently updated online version of the Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine book.
  • Books@Ovid provides online access to a collection of highly regarded medicine, nursing, pharmacology and allied health texts.
  • Evidence-based Medicine text. Click on 'log in' on opening page to access content.
  • The STAT!Ref Online Library is a customizable, cross-searchable library with over 65 titles to choose from and provides two user interfaces for searching: the 'Quick', and 'Classic' interfaces. No matter which interface you prefer, your results are displayed as a link. Clicking on a selection shows detailed information in full-text book format complete with tables and graphics.

Clinical Tools

  • Essential Evidence Plus is a tool that makes it possible to search a number of medical information resources and decision support calculators simultaneously. The resources include the Cochrane database of systematic reviews, clinical practice guidelines, patient education handouts and summaries - called POEMs (Patient Oriented Evidence that Matters) - on various medical topics. Western libraries' subscription to this resource includes a free download of the PDA version.   • The American College of Physicians' Physicians' Information and Education Resource offers a Web-based evidence-based clinical guidance designed for rapid access to clinical information at the point of care by physicians and other health care providers.
  • UpToDate is an information resource for health professionals designed to answer clinical questions by summarizing published evidence and making specific recommendations for patient care. It is available on all onsite computer workstations at UWO, LHSC and SJHC.

Databases

  • PubMed is a database that provides access to more than 17 million citations and abstracts from biomedical journals. It is made available by the United States National Library of Medicine (NLM) and is searchable on the web at no cost. This database is useful for finding health and other related information.
  • The Cochrane Library is a collection of databases - including the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and others - that contain high-quality information regarding the effects of various interventions in health care.
  • The Excerpta Medica database (EMBASE) provides access to information on medical and drug-related subjects. It contains citations and abstracts from over 5000 biomedical journals from 70 countries.
  • Provides access to three multidisciplinary databases of bibliographic information indexed so that you can search for specific articles by subject, author, journal, and/or author address. Each Web of Science database includes the article's cited reference list (often called its bibliography). This unique feature allows searching for articles that cite a known author or work. Web of Science includes Arts & Humanities Citation Index, Science Citation Index Expanded, Social Sciences Citation Index.
