  • Proquest Search - Political Science and Public Administration replaces Scholars Portal Search.  With Proquest Search - Political Science and Public Administration you will be able to search 30 Databases for scholarly and popular content for research on topics in International Political Science.

  • With coverage from 1991 to the present, CIAO (Columbia International Affairs Online) is a very useful resource for theory and research in international affairs. In addition to journals and policy briefs, CIAO provides access to conference proceedings, working papers and, Non-Governmental Organization papers. 

  •  This database provides access to political science articles that are publishd in scholarly journals and yearbooks from around the world. International relations, political thinkers and ideas; institutions; political processes; and national and area studies are covered here.

  • JSTOR is a very useful multidisciplinary database that provides access to complete back runs of core journals for International Political Science.

    IMPORTANT - Please Note: The articles in the database come from the first issue of each journal up to about 3 to 5 years ago. The most recent articles for each journal, therefore, will probably not be found in this database. To find the current scholarly articles make sure you search in additional databases: Scholars Portal Search database or CIAO or International Political Science Abstracts.   • ABSEES provides access to journal articles, books, dissertations, some government publications and online resources that are published in Canada and the United States on Russia, the former Soviet Union, East and Central Europe.

Encyclopedias

  • This is an excellent collection of electronic reference works from one of the world's biggest reference publishers.  Oxford Reference Online Premium is the place to start your research to identify significant dates, people and events and to define important concepts. Oxford Reference Online Premium includes the following Political Science titles: A Dictionary of Political Biography, The Oxford Companion to the Politics of the World and The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Politics.
  • The International Studies Encyclopedia is one of the most comprehensive reference works for the fields of international studies and international relations.
  • The Encyclopedia of the United Nations and International Agreements offers articles on every country, organization, committee and operation connected with the United Nations.  You will also find definitions of every international treaty since the League of Nations.This is a 4-Volume print resource, located in The D.B.   • The Encyclopedia of Government and Politics is a 2-Volume print resource that provides a very good starting point for your research.

  • The Blackwell Dictionary of Political Science, Licensed to Western Users only, is an electronic dictionary that is best used through the alphabetical index rather than the search box.

Government Information

  • AccessUN contains the full-text of several thousand UN documents. This resource indexes virtually every document from the main UN agencies: General Assembly, Security Council, Secretariat and the International Court of Justice.  It contains Official Records, masthead documents, draft resolutions, meeting records, UN Sales Publications, and the UN Treaty Series citations. Includes documents from 1951 to the present.
  • UNBISNET is the primary online index to United Nations documentation published since 1979.  It provides links to the full text of recent documentation from UN bodies worldwide.

  • This excellent resource offers access to information produced by or pertaining to the United States Congress from 1789 to the present. This is partcularly useful for International Relations as the US Government regularly produces research and policy documents on issues of international scope. Full text for titles from 2004 to the present. Includes bills, laws, legislative histories, committee prints, House and Senate documents and reports, the Congressional Record, Code of Federal Regulations, and Federal Register. Especially useful are the full text reports of Congressional Research Service reports For a complete description of contents, coverage, and update frequency, consult the online Help section.

  • The United Nations Handbook is published at the start of each General Assembly by the New Zealand Government.  The Handbook provides a clearly arranged guide to the organizations that make up the United Nations. You will find this resource in DBW Government Publications: JZ4970.U54

  • SourceOECD, available to Western users only,  the publications portal for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), describes itself as an Online Library of Statistical Databases, Books and Periodicals. Statistics are available by Topic, Country or Department.
  • Licensed to Western users only, the United Natons Treaty Collection (UNTS), offers access to a collection of over 50,000 treaties and international agreements published by the UN Secretariat since 1946.  The documents are published in their original languages and translated into English and French, as appropriate.

  •  The Yearbook of the United Nations categorizes all of the major activities undertaken in the United Nations system in a given year. This is a primary reference work for work on the United Nations.

News Sources

  • Factiva provides electronic coverage of news sources from 1985 from over 8000 sources from 118 countries. The coverage of the sources is up to the current date (no embargo).  Enter your search terms in the search box and refine your search by selecting limits for source, industry, region, language etc.
  • LexisNexis, licensed to Western users only, provides access to over 2,300 newspapers, journals, newsletters and broadcast transcripts. Most of the items in LexisNexis are available as full-text articles. There are relatively few academic journals in this database.

  • The reports in Keesing's Record of World Events are based on information obtained from press, broadcasting, official and other sources. This resource seeks to provide a concise, accurate and unbiased account of important developments in each of the world's countries and major international organisations.

  • The Alt-Press Watch database offers access to newspapers, magazines and journals of the alternative and independent press.  You can download a list of publications covered by this database from a link on the right side of the first page.

  • Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) Daily Reports covers the Middle East & Africa, Middle East & North Africa, Near East & South Asia for the years 1974-1996.  Created by US Presidential Directive in WWII, the original mission of FBIS was to monitor, record, transcribe and translate intercepted radio broadcasts from foreign governments, official news services, and clandestine broadcasts from occupied territories. These translations, or transcriptions in the case of English language materials, make up the Daily Reports.

Statistics and Data

  • World Development Indicators Online offers over 575 development indicators and time series data from 1960 to 2007 for over 220 countries. Data includes social, economic, financial, natual resources, and environmental indicators.

    Data can be exported into formats like Excel.

  • GDF (Global Development Finance) Online, available to Western users only, provides statistical data for 147 countries. External debt, stocks and flows, major economic aggregates, and key debt ratios as well as average terms of new commitments, currency composition of long-term debt, debt restructuring, and scheduled debt service projections. The data selection screens are intuitive and easy to use. Data can also be exported in standard formats like Excel.

  • Ipsos News Centre, a resource licensed to Western users only, is a source of polls, puplic opinion and research informationon a wide range of topics. The survey-based reports provide detailed data tables, charts, and other forms of statistical information.

  • UNdata provides access to United Nations statistical databases through a single entry point with useful features like Country Profiles, Advanced Search and Glossaries to assist research.   There are over 60 million data points, covering a wide range of themes including Agriculture, Crime, Education, Employment, Energy, Environment, Health, HIV/AIDS, Human Development, Industry, Information and Communication Technology, National Accounts, Population, Refugees, Tourism, Trade, as well as the Millennium Development Goals indicators.

  • The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace is a private, nonprofit Think Tank dedicated to advancing cooperation between nations and promoting active international engagement by the United States.  You can search the site for publications by Topic, Author, Project, Date and Type of Publication.
