  • Proquest Search - Political Science and Public Administration replaces Scholars Portal Search.  With Proquest Search - Political Science and Public Administration you will be able to search 30 Databases for scholarly and popular content for research on topics in Political Science, Local Government and Public Administration.

  • JSTOR is a very useful multidisciplinary database that provides access to complete back runs of core journals for Public Policy and Public Administration. IMPORTANT - Please Note: The articles in the database come from the first issue of each journal up to about 3 to 5 years ago. The most recent articles for each journal, therefore, will probably not be found in this database. To view a list of the Public Policy and Administration journals covered by JSTOR click this link.
  • CBCA Reference is a key resource for Canadian information. It provides in-depth access to a wide diversity of Canadian periodicals: academic, special interest, and general interest titles. The academic titles include the most prominent journals from the social sciences while other magazines covered by CBCA focus on opinion, public policy, children/youth, lifestyles, arts and culture, health, regional concerns, etc.
  • This database provides access to Public Administration articles that are publishd in scholarly journals and yearbooks from around the world. International relations, political thinkers and ideas; institutions; political processes; and national and area studies can be found here.
  • The Canadian Public Policy Collection is an important collection of "publications from public policy institutes, government agencies, advocacy groups, think tanks, university research centres and other public interest groups."
    To access this collection you must download the ebrary Reader.
  • PAIS International is provides access to literature on public policy, social policy, and the social sciences in general. You will discover journal articles, books, government documents, statistical collections, committee reports, directories, serials, reports of public, intergovernmental, and private organizations, and most other forms of printed literature from all over the world.

Encyclopedias

  • This resource can be found in the Reference Collection of The D.B. Weldon Library (Main Floor).  This is an excellent starting point for your research in Public Administration. You will find essential information about the concepts, people, places and events in this discipline.
  • Oxford Reference Online Premium is an excellent collection of electronic reference works. This is a very good starting point for your research, where you can identify dates, people and events and define important concepts. Oxford Reference Online Premium includes the following Political Science titles: A Dictionary of Political Biography, The Oxford Companion to the Politics of the World and The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Politics. All of the titles are searched at the same time.
  • The Encyclopedia of Government and Politics is a 2-Volume print resource that provides a very good starting point for your research.

    You will find this encyclopedia in the the DBW Stacks and the Reference Collection: JA61.E53

  • The Encyclopedia includes numerous entries on individuals, movements, political parties, and ideological principles, with those usually thought of as left in the left-hand volume (Volume 1), and those considered on the right in the right-hand volume (Volume 2).

Government Information

  • Canadian Research Index (CRI) indexes publications of research value that are issued by Canadian federal, provincial and territorial governments. Over 50% of the documents listed in CRI are non-depository,which means you will not find them listed in the Western Libraries Catalogue. CRI indexes a massive set of microfiche that are located on the Ground Floor in The D.B. Weldon Library. The collection contains monographs and annual publications, scientific reports, statistical report and policy papers.
  • The Association of Ontario Municipalities is a non-profit organization that represents almost all of Ontario's municipal governments.  The mandate of the organization is to support and enhance strong and effective municipal government in Ontario.

  • Documents in the OurOntario Government Documents Collection are captured from publicly available websites. You will find a wide variety of government policy and program documents. Documents are uploaded quarterly.  For the most current documents (since the last quarterly upload)  check: https://www.publications.serviceontario.ca/ecom/.  Search for keywords in the search box, or browse lists of titles, lists of the ministry/agency, authors, subjects, or years.

  • LEGISinfo is an essential research tool for finding information on legislation currently before the Canadian Parliament. LEGISinfo provides electronic access to a wide range of information about individual bills, such as: the text of the bill at various stages, government press releases and backgrounders; legislative summaries from the Parliamentary Information and Research Service; imporant speeches at second reading; votes and coming into force data.

  • Ontario: e-Laws provides the text of Ontario statutes and regulations including several reference tables to: Statute Titles; Regulations Titles; Table of Public Statutes; Table of Regulations; Table of Proclaimed Provisions; Table of Unproclaimed Provisions.

Statistics and Data

  • E-STAT allows you to track trends in almost every aspect of the lives of Canadians. This is an interactive database that contains articles from Canadian Social Trends and the most recent edition of the Canada Year Book. Canadian social and economic data from the CANSIM (Statistics Canada's computerized database) are included as well as historical Census data from back to 1665.
  • The Equinox Data Delivery System provides access to data made available through Statistics Canada’s Data Liberation Initiative (DLI) as well as selected data from the Interuniversity Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) and provides pointers to other sources of data (e.g., the “Official Statistics” web site). Basic and Advanced Search options are available as are various Browse options.

  • <Odesi> (Ontario Data Documentation, Extraction Service and Infrastructure) is a digital repository for social science data, including polling data.  <Odesi> provides access to extensive collections of polling and social survey data including: Canadian Opinion Research Archive (CORA) , Canadian Gallup , and Ipsos Reid . Statistics Canada's public-use survey data forms the core of <odesi>'s social survey data holdings.

  • Ipsos News Center is a source of polls, public opinion and research information on industry topics including politics, societal issues, technology, health, finance, and other current issues. Provides survey-based reports written by Ipsos research professionals in North America and around the world. Reports offer detailed data tables, charts, and other forms of statistical information. Please note users are required to enter their UWO username and password before viewing accessing this resource.

  • The Canadian Urban Institute's Urban Resources (CUI) provides the means for encouraging a better understanding of contemporary urban issues among business, government and other key institutions.

    The CUI provides a very useful listing of municipal and local government urban resource web sites.

  • The Canadian Public Policy Collection is an important collection of "publications from public policy institutes, government agencies, advocacy groups, think tanks, university research centres and other public interest groups."

  • The IPAC is an association of public servants, academics, and others interested in public administration.  This is a membership-based organization that leads public administration research in Canada.

  • Provides access to a wide range of publications across the policy spectrum.
  • The objective of UNPAN is to establish an internet-based network that links regional and national institutions devoted to public administration, thereby facilitating information exchange, experience sharing, and training in the area of public sector policy and management.
