Libraries and Resource Centres

  • The Population Studies Centre is housed in the Department of Sociology, University of Western Ontario. Established in 1974, the Population Studies Centre fosters research between faculty and students and provides training facilities for graduate and undergraduate students.

Statistics and Data

  • Equinox provides desktop access to Statistics Canada Data Liberation Initiative (DLI) data and other geospatial and data products. It is the successor of the data delivery system formally know as the Internet Data Library System (IDLS). Visit Equinox Project Overview to learn more details about this project.
  • A jointly funded project between the Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL) and OntarioBuys provides university researchers with access to datasets in a web-based data extraction system delivered through the Scholars Portal model. The project targets Statistics Canada datasets, datafiles from Gallup Canada and other polling companies, public-domain files such as the Canadian National Election Surveys and selected files from the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR). The files are marked-up using DDI, an international, XML-based metadata tagging system which allows data resource discovery, distributed access, extraction and analysis ... researchers working with opinion polls will be able to search across hundreds of datasets and collections to see trends and historical patterns over time"--summarized from the project page.
  • An interactive database containing articles from Canadian Social Trends and the latest edition of the Canada Year Book. Also includes Canadian social and economic data from the CANSIM database, as well as current and historical Census data dating back to 1665.
  • Statistics Canada produces statistics in the following areas: population, resources, economy, society and culture. Statitsics include Census information plus approximately 350 surveys on "virtually all aspects of Canadian life."

  • The CCSD research team specializes in social, economic, labour market and demographic issues, and provides statistical and research services to its clients.  Many of its research reports are available online.  Its "Stats & Facts" page contains tables of some of the more frequently requested information.
  • Index of Canadian historical economic and social science statistics, including access to statistical tables. This volume contains about 1,088 statistical tables from the start of the Confederation in 1867 to the mid-1970s.

  • The National Clearinghouse on Family Violence (NCFV) is a one-stop source for information on violence and abuse within the family. It operates on behalf of the 15 partner departments, agencies and Crown corporations of the federal Family Violence Initiative. The NCFV collects, develops and disseminates resources on prevention, protection and treatment. By increasing awareness, the NCFV encourages Canadian communities to become involved in reducing the occurrence of family violence.
  • This site provides official UN estimates (1950-2000) and projections (2000-2050) for every country in the world, including estimates and projections of 28 demographic indicator (birth rates, deaths rates, infant mortality rates and life expectancy, etc.).
  • This site provides data by country on HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and other key health and socio-economic indicators. The data are displayed in tables, charts, and colour-coded maps and can be downloaded for custom analyses.
