  • The Excerpta Medica database (EMBASE) provides access to information on medical and drug-related subjects. It contains citations and abstracts from over 5000 biomedical journals from 70 countries.
  • The Cochrane Library is a collection of databases - including the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and others - that contain high-quality information regarding the effects of various interventions in health care.  Link to the Wiley Online Library here.

  • Scopus is an abstracts database covering articles from peer-reviewed titles, including international publishers. Subject coverage includes: Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Engineering; Life and Health Sciences; Social Sciences, Psychology and Economics; Biological, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; and General Sciences.
  • Provides comprehensive coverage of the English language journal literature related to nursing and the allied health disciplines. Subject areas include Health Sciences, Medicine, Dentistry.
  • PsycINFO provides access to international literature in psychology and related disciplines - including psychiatry, education, medicine, nursing, pharmacology, social work, business and law.
  • An alternative medicine database for physicians, therapists, medical researchers and clinicians who want to learn more about alternative treatments to conventional medicine, consisting primarily of citations and abstracts from biomedical journals along with other relevant articles taken from books, newspapers, conference proceedings and a number of other document types.

Clinical Tools

  • DynaMed is an evidence-based, clinical reference tool created by physicians for physicians and other health care professionals for use primarily at the 'point-of-care.' DynaMed contains AHFS drug information, article references, medical calculators, patient information, and thousands of topics organized into clinical summaries. Content in DynaMed is updated daily.

    In order to obtain or renew a Dynamed Mobile serial number either send an email to dynamedsupport@ebscohost.com  or phone 1-800-758-5995. Please include or have available your full name, the name of institution, and the type of device you are using. You must provide a valid Western email address, ie. one that ends with @uwo.ca in order to receive a serial number. The serial number will be emailed to the @uwo.ca address you provide.  .


  • The American College of Physicians' Physicians' Information and Education Resource offers a Web-based evidence-based clinical guidance designed for rapid access to clinical information at the point of care by physicians and other health care providers.
  • AccessMedicine is an innovative online resource that provides students, residents, clinicians, researchers, and all health professionals with access to more than 60 medical titles from the best minds in medicine, updated content, thousands of images and illustrations, interactive self-assessment, case files, diagnostic tools and a comprehensive search platform.
  • Essential Evidence Plus is a tool that makes it possible to search a number of medical information resources and decision support calculators simultaneously. The resources include the Cochrane database of systematic reviews, clinical practice guidelines, patient education handouts and summaries - called POEMs (Patient Oriented Evidence that Matters) - on various medical topics.                             POEM of the Week Podcast

  • UpToDate is an information resource for health professionals designed to answer clinical questions by summarizing published evidence and making specific recommendations for patient care.
  • The Centre for Reivews and Dissemination (UK) contains three key databases:

    DARE contains 15,000 abstracts of systematic reviews including over 6,000 quality assessed reviews and details of all Cochrane reviews and protocols.

    NHS EED contains 24,000 abstracts of health economics papers including over 7,000 quality assessed economic evaluations.

    HTA brings together details of over 8,000 completed and ongoing health technology assessments from around the world.

  • The TRIP Database is free unified search tool of evidence-based sites such as ACP Journal Club, Bandolier, Cochrane, DARE, Health Technology Assessment, and the National Guideline Clearing House. TRIP is produced by the Centre for Research Support in the UK.
  • Produced by the Canadian Pharmacists Association, the online Compendium of Pharmaceuticals and Specialties (e-CPS) provides health care professionals with web access to the most current Canadian drug information.
  • Natural Standard is an international research collaboration that aggregates and synthesizes data on complementary and alternative therapies. Using a comprehensive methodology and reproducible grading scales, information is created that is evidence-based, consensus-based, and peer-reviewed, tapping into the collective expertise of a multidisciplinary Editorial Board.

E-books

Multimedia

  • The SMART Imagebase is a premier database of accurate, high quality medical illustrations, animations, and interactive multimedia. The collection contains thousands of images depicting normal anatomy, physiology, embryology, and histology, as well as the web's largest repository of reference illustrations depicting surgery, trauma, pathology, diseases and conditions. Images are available for downloading and educational use.
  • Search video and audio content on AccessMedicine. Organized by system: cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, muskuloskeletal, neurologic, reproductive and respiratory. Also includes Grand Rounds Lectures: a series of multimedia lectures on key medical topics in internal medicine and pharmacology.
  • This collection of over 1000 talks (with new content being added all the time) contains animated audio visual presentations with narration by world leading scientists, researchers and clinicians.
  • Database contains rotatable 3D models of the human body and anatomical layers which may be stripped away.
