Introduction to RefWorks

Importing Citations into Word Documents

How do you insert citations into Word documents?

You can insert footnotes and citations into your text with Write-N-Cite, a companion program to RefWorks. Although RefWorks is web-based, to use Write-N-Cite you must download the free program. Program requirements can be found here.

To get Write-N-Cite:

1.  Tools > Write-N-Cite

3.  Download appropriate version and follow installation instructions

To put citations into your paper:

1.  Make sure your file is saved as a Microsoft Word file (.doc)

2.  Click where you want to insert the citation

3.  Open the Add-Ins tab and click the Write-N-Cite button (two buttons may appear, either will work)

4.  Log in if you need to, then select a citation from your list by clicking Cite

5.  Repeat as needed for multiple citations

6.  Save document (it will save as Final-yourfilename.doc which you can edit later)

*** The reference will be added in a cryptic form (i.e: {{428 Saunders, Jana C. 2005;}} ) but will change to the format you desire once a bibliography has been created through Write-N-Cite.***

To create a bibliography with Write-N-Cite:

  1. To create a bibliography, click the Write-N-Cite button
