Refworks: Common Problems for Students

Common problems that students encounter when using RefWorks. The tips below will help students avoid problems and use RefWorks more efficiently.Remind students of these tips in order to avoid common problems. These are the most common questions we see fom students in the library.

Start Early

Start your research early—it often takes longer than you expect! Allow yourself time to find the high-quality sources that you need. Ask a librarian for Research Help if you need help getting started.

Copy the whole citation

When you copy a citation, be sure that all the information you will need is included. The following tutorials explain the parts of a citation that are included when citing books and journals:

Finding Books and Journal Articles- Physical Sciences

Finding Books and Journal Articles- Health Sciences

Keep Track in Folders

RefWorks allows you to organize and manage your references using named folders. With these folders, you can create reference lists for particular papers or topics, share your list with group members, and view recently added references.

Don’t remove duplicates after you’ve started writing with Write N Cite

Write N Cite is a plug-in that allows you to run RefWorks in your word processor, insert citations as you write, and generate in-text citations and a bibliography formatted in the style you choose. Removing duplicates deletes the Ref ID of the most recently added copy—if this is the reference linked to your paper, you will lose the citations you have inserted.
