Dr. J. Bertram Collip was born in Belleville, Ontario in 1892. Studying at the University of Toronto, Dr. Collip completed a degree in physiology and biochemistry. Completing graduate training under Dr. A. B. Macallum, Dr. Collip obtained his M.D. and Ph.D. in 1916. In 1920 he accepted the position of full Professor and Department Head at The University of Alberta.

After his work in developing the process for clinical trial usable insulin for the Department of Physiology at the University of Toronto, Dr. Collip resumed his position at the University of Alberta until 1928 when he transferred to McGill University for a position in biochemistry.

Dr. Collip was appointed Dean of Medicine and Professor of Medical Research in 1947 at Western University. Dr. Collip was awarded several honours for his work in the development of insulin and remains one of the most honourable of Western University's medical faculty to date.

Dr. Collip died in 1965.
