Jerry Fitzgerald enrolled at Western in 1948 and became a three sport athlete on four Canadian championship teams. From St. Catherines, Ontario, at fifteen he had already won the Canadian juvenile basketball title on the Hayes Steel basketball team. He also played lacrosse on a city championship minor bantam team, and the next year his bantam team won the Ontario championship. He played at the Maple Leaf Gardens for the first time with the St. Catherines Athletics and won the Canadian title for lacrosse, the Mann Cup. His 182 pounds and 5’ 10” frame made him an ideal plunging back on the football team, and “Fitzy” played the guard position on the basketball team. On top of his athletics, Fitzgerald was a physical education student.
