Donald “Ironman” Wright competed at Western from 1929-33 as an all-round athlete. During this period, track and field events were one day meets held in the fall and spring. During his time at Western, Don Wright went undefeated in the high hurdles, low hurdles and broad (long) jump. Even more impressive was the fact that he never placed out of the medals in the other six events in which he competed. To top off his accomplishments, Wright was the Howard G. Ferguson Trophy winner in 1932, given for outstanding contributions to Western in academics, athletics and leadership.
Don Wright has contributed to Western as both an athlete and a philanthropist. He has funded academic scholarships in classics and music, the Mustangs marching band and track and field teams, as well as donating money for an all-weather track at the TD Waterhouse Stadium.
