Jack Fairs has been involved with sports his entire life. When he came to Western as a student in 1942, he played both football and basketball. After completing a Master’s degree, he returned to Western in 1947 as part of the athletic staff, acting as assistant coach for the Mustang football team. Throughout his career at Western, Fairs has coached a total of five sports: football, basketball, baseball, tennis and squash. However, it could be argued that the sport of squash has benefited the most from his guidance. Taking over coaching duties in the 1960s, Fairs transformed the sport and by the 1970s Western’s squash teams were unstoppable. Today, the squash program boasts a record of over thirty Ontario University Athletic Association team and twenty single titles, making them one of the highest accomplished sports at Western. To this day, at over eighty years old, the devoted Jack Fairs continues to lead Western’s squash team as head coach.
