In high school, she was a favoured athlete, participating in basketball, track and volleyball. Russo competed on Canada's national volleyball team for eight years, beginning in 1985. She then went on to compete in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta on the volleyball team, where they placed tenth. At Western, Russo was one of the first non-academic full-time coaches and she led the team to third place at the Ontario Women's Interuniversity Athletic Association championships. After she coached the Western team, she went on to help coach the national team and helped it qualify for the 2006 Olympic games. She was awarded Coach of the Year in 1997-98 for her work at the University of British Columbia. Russo has also been the CBC volleyball analyst and her commentary has been featured in several articles, including those on the Athens and Beijing Olympic games.
