1976 Wrestling

Wrestling flourished at The University of Western Ontario during the 1970s.  Western wrestlers participated in numerous national and international competitions and no less than half of the 1976 Canadian Olympic team was made up of current Mustang wrestlers.

Ray Takahashi, Mike Barry, Egon Beiler, Clive Llewllyn and Brian Renken were five of the ten athletes selected for the national team at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal.  None of the athletes won a medal, although many continued to compete internationally.

Almost all were selected to represent Canada at the 1980 Olympics in Moscow, which, unfortunately for the athletes, Canada ultimately boycotted.  Of the five athletes from the 1976 team, only Ray Takahashi would have the opportunity to compete in another Olympics.
