Egon Beiler has had a very successful wrestling career and has received national and international acclamation. Egon began wrestling in high school and started out his university career at the University of Waterloo. After two years, he decided to apply to Western to work with Glynn Leyshon in 1975. Beiler said that Western stood alone with its wrestling program and in 1975, Beiler attributed other amazing wrestlers for helping him make the Olympic team since he had a great selection of sparring partners.
Egon then went to Lakehead to study under the current Olympic coach and made the 1976 Olympic team. Between 1977-81, Egon returned to Western to complete his dentistry degree. During this time Egon had a hard time maintaining his wrestling status and completing his course requirements, but he persevered and made the 1980 Olympic team. After completing his degree in dentistry, Egon took a break from wrestling and coached the University of Waterloo team for a year and a half. He missed the ring too much, however, and started training with the University of Guelph team. But just nine weeks before the try-out for the 1984 Olympic team, Egon suffered a neck injury and retired. Egon is currently a dentist in Kitchener.
