Borrowing

Identification

A valid university identification card is required to borrow items from Western Libraries and the Affiliated University College, as well as from Omni Libraries.

  • Western ONECard: issued to current students, faculty and staff of Western and the Affiliated University College Libraries.
  • University ID card: from a participating Omni Library.
  • Alumni card: issued to Western graduates. To obtain your free card, contact Alumni Relations.
  • Direct Borrower's card: issued to current students, faculty and staff of other Canadian universities; must fill out Direct Borrower's application form at any Service Desk.
  • Guest Borrower's card: issued to members of the general public; must complete Guest Borrower's application form; fees apply.
  • Faculty Authorized Borrower card: Faculty and instructors may authorize students or assistants to borrow materials for university research / teaching purposes. To set up authorization, complete and submit the Faculty Authorized Borrowers form.

Western Libraries is a member of several library consortia that permit reciprocal borrowing privileges for faculty, students and staff at most Canadian academic libraries and many academic libraries in the United States. For details please see:

Where Can I Borrow?

You may borrow items from any of the Western Libraries and the Affiliated University College Libraries.

Western faculty, students and staff may also borrow general-loan print materials from all participating Omni Libraries. Users may request items via the search tool for pick up at a Western or Affiliate University College library location, or borrow in-person at any participating library.

Loan Periods

For information on how long you can borrow items, please consult our loan policies page.

You may renew regular loan items unless:

  • your account has been suspended because of overdue items or fines totalling more than $20
  • they have been recalled

Reserve and short-loan items are not eligible for renewal.

Returns

Library items should be returned as soon as they are no longer needed so they are available to others.

  • Regular loans may be returned to any of the Western Libraries, Affiliated University College Libraries, or Omni Libraries.
  • Reserve and short-loan items must be returned to the owning library by the date and time specified (e.g. a Weldon Course Readings book must be returned to Weldon Library).
