Although this family-owned chain is reported to have been the second-oldest retail chain after HBC, dating to 1853, we do not have any information in book form about them. The purpose here is to point you to the obituary of one of the partners in the firm since it provides useful information. See: "Bill Heaslip, Retailer: 1927-2006: He Went From Running a Toronto Hardware Store to Owning One of Canada's Largest Men's Clothing Outlets - Then Lost it in One of the First Big Retail Bankruptcies of the 1990s", Danny Gallagher, The Globe and Mail, July 12, 2006, p.57.
Articles about Grafton can be found by searching some of our databases. For example, this one discusses the resignation of Mr. Heaslip back in 1992. "Grafton Group's Major Shareholder Quits As Chief," Daniel Girard, Toronto Star, Jan. 22, 1992, p.F7. Mr. Heaslip, it should be noted, was a generous philanthropist who made numerous donations to Canadian universities and other organizations.
