Poag’s Golden Opportunity: 50th Anniversary Celebration” by Hank Daniszewski, The London Free Press, October 6, 2009.
Although this resource consists mainly of a list of company history books, we do sometimes include useful sources that provide information about local enterprises. In this case, Poag’s is a successful jeweller located in Strathroy, Ontario. Now a half century old, Poag’s consists of 4,000 square feet and employs 17. [ Oct. 2009] The article offers additional background, with a brief history and an explanation of the reasons behind the success of this family business. It also provides a photo of the Poag family.

JAMES RICHARDSON AND SONS

Although there are no books specifically on James Richardson we are providing some information about this private Canadian enterprise in 2007 because it is their 150th anniversary year and because it has been rumoured that the company is going public and/ or acquiring Agricore United. Information about the anniversary is found on the company web site. Accounts about the "going public" possibility are to be found c.Feb. 2007. For example: "After 150 Years, The Richardson Family Takes it Public" by Gordon Pitts, The Globe and Mail, Feb. 22, 2007, p.B6 and "Agricore Finds its White Knight" by Richard Blackwell, in the same issue, p.B1.

KPMG - (Canada)

"A History of KPMG in Canada". This historical sketch was copied from the KPMG site in 2008 - www.kpmg.ca.

In Canada, KPMG's roots date back to 1840. Since that date, more than 115 firms in communities across Canada have joined forces to create KPMG. Each of these has played a vital role in the growth of KPMG in Canada.

Thorne Riddell

In 1909, John L. Thorne started an accounting partnership in Toronto, which enjoyed considerable growth, even though Thorne himself died suddenly in 1924. Starting in the late 1950s, the firm originated an affiliation of independent firms across Canada, while at the same time entering into a series of regional mergers.

In 1966, a decision was made to develop a national firm. A new partnership, Thorne Gunn Helliwell & Christenson, was created with a more closely integrated structure that was able to deliver its services to clients on a Canada-wide basis.

James Riddell started an accounting practice, Riddell, Stead & Co. in Montreal in 1840. In 1955, the then partners of Riddell, Stead & Co. formed a truly national firm, which gave impetus and direction for its subsequent development.

In 1974, Riddell, Stead & Co. merged with Thorne Gunn Helliwell & Christenson to become Thorne Riddell.

Ernst & Whinney

Ernst & Ernst in Canada was first established by Ernst & Ernst U.S. as a two-room office and a staff of three in Toronto in 1932. The function of the Canadian practice was to service the Canadian operations of the firm's U.S. clients.

In 1972, the firm was patriated to its Canadian partners and become a truly Canadian partnership. This was followed by a period of substantial growth, accomplished partially through mergers.

On July 1, 1979, the worldwide associated firms of Ernst & Ernst and Whinney Murray & Co. merged to create Ernst & Whinney, and the Canadian firm became one of the founding members.

The Canadian practice was primarily involved in accounting and auditing for its first 25 years. The firm's management consulting service, established in 1955, had reached a staff strength of 115 in ten offices by 1986.

A small insolvency practice was added through a 1973 merger in Vancouver. Other insolvency practices were added in Montreal and Toronto in the mid 1970s. In 1986, the firm's Insolvency Division had a professional strength of over 70 and was located in eight offices.

On August 1, 1986, Thorne Riddell and Ernst & Whinney merged to create Thorne Ernst & Whinney (TEW).

Stevenson Kellogg Ernst & Whinney

Stevenson & Kellogg was founded in 1936. In 1980, the firm acquired the management consulting practice of Thorne Riddell and became Thorne Stevenson & Kellogg. In 1986, the firm merged in the consulting practice of Ernst & Whinney, became a member of Ernst & Whinney International, and changed its name to Stevenson Kellogg Ernst & Whinney (SKE&W).

SKE&W was owned by its professional and support staff, but the firm had a contractual agreement with Thorne Ernst & Whinney and operated very closely with the TEW firm.

Peat Marwick

The Canadian practice of Peat Marwick was opened in Winnipeg in 1907, by Andrew Stewart, a Scot who came from the Minneapolis office of Marwick, Mitchell & Co. By 1913, there were also offices in Montreal, Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary.

Peat Marwick grew in Canada and prospered during the postwar years. Several mergers occurred that enhanced geographic or functional strength. The firm's management consulting practice was established in 1952.

KPMG in Canada

In 1989, Thorne Ernst & Whinney merged with Peat Marwick to create Peat Marwick Thorne. At the same time, the two consulting practices merged to create Peat Marwick Stevenson & Kellogg.

In 1994, Peat Marwick Thorne and Peat Marwick Stevenson & Kellogg joined forces to become KPMG Canada. In 1996, the firm standardized its name internationally as KPMG.
