POP SHOPPE

In the late 1960s The Pop Shoppe was founded in London, Ontario. The company went out of business in the early 1980s. The Pop Shoppe has been resurrected and, along with the new owner, Brian Alger, is the subject of an informative essay by Joanna Pachner in the June 3, 2010 issue of “Your Magazine” in the Globe and Mail. This article is a good place to begin your research on this company.
In 2010, there is a company website that includes a timeline under “The Pop Shoppe Story” – see: thepopshoppe.com. There is also a brief Wikipedia entry.

The Johnston Library has some corporate reports and “Financial Post Cards” relating to Pop Shoppes International. See both the “Historical Annual Reports Collection” and “Canadian Annual Reports on Microfiche”.

PURDY'S CHOCOLATES

Although there are no books at this time that outline the history of this company we will attempt here to gather information about it for several reasons:

1. This Canadian-owned and family- operated company is well-known on the west coast and is the second-largest chocolate retailer in Canada (see also our entries for Laura Secord and Ganong);
2. The company has been successful over a long period and recently celebrated its centennial.
3. The company typically shows up on the lists we maintain for “Canada’s Best Employers”;
4. Purdy’s is recognized here also as a company that provides considerable historical information on its website: [which in 2010 is here: http://www.purdys.com/ ]
5. The founder of the company, Richard Carmon Purdy, was born here in London, Ontario in 1878. (This bibliography originates from the University of Western Ontario in London). The company also recently expanded into Ontario.

Those interested in the history of Purdy’s should begin, as we mentioned, at the company’s website. Apart from background information about Richard Purdy, there is also material related to the current owners who have run the company since 1963 (the Flavell family). A timeline also provides important dates in the history of the company. We will here add some additional articles we have located that will be useful for historical researchers.

- “Vancouver’s Oldest Business Still Carries the Founding Family’s Tradition of Innovation,” Gordon Hamilton, Vancouver Sun, Nov. 18, 2008. This piece offers a brief profile of Purdy’s along with some other companies with a long history in British Columbia.

- “Purdy’s and Birks A Century Later: Both Companies Set Up Shop in Vancouver in 1907 and Remain Local Institutions. What’s Their Secret?”, Bruce Constantineau, Vancouver Sun, Feb. 10, 2007

- “Canada Post: Chocolate Lovers...This One’s For You,” Canadian Press, February 1, 2007.

- “Sweet Taste of Success Has Purdy’s Moving Briskly,” Malcolm Perry, Vancouver Sun, Jan. 18, 2007.

- “How Sweet it Is! Purdy’s, the Highly Regarded Vancouver-based Chocolatier, Has Finally Brought Its Act to Ontario,” David Olive, The Toronto Star, April 11, 2004. see also the entries for Laura Secord, Ganong.]. This piece is fairly long and informative (1700 words)

- “Purdy’s Comes East, Takes on Secord: Chocolate War Brews,” Hollie Shaw, The National Post, Aug. 30, 2004.
