BERTELSMANN AG

Obituary: Reinhard Mohn (1921-2009)

Mr. Mohn is generally regarded as the major force behind the development of Bertelsmann in the post-war era. Although Bertelsmann is now a well-known global media company (and owner, for example, of the publisher Random House), it remains private and, as far as we know, there are no historical accounts of the company in English. The October obituaries for Mr. Mohn provide valuable information and some of them are recorded here:

“FACTBOX- Five Facts About Bertelsmann’s Reinhard Mohn,” Reuters News, Oct. 4, 2009; “German Industrial Leader Always Spoke His Mind,” by Ralph Atkins, Financial Times, Oct. 4, 2009; “Reinhard Mohn, 88, of Bertelsmann Dies,” Wall Street Journal, Oct. 4, 2009 and “Reinhard Mohn, Who Built Up Bertelsmann, Dead,” Associated Press. Oct. 4, 2009. Given Mr. Mohn’s wealth and stature, you will find many more during October 2009.

Among the resources of the Western Libraries see:

BRUCE R. SMITH LTD.

Anyone traveling the highways will be familiar with the yellow, green and white trucks related to this company. At this time (April 2007) there are about 430 trucks, 1500 trailers and the Simcoe-based company employs about 630 people. It is among the top 25 trucking companies in Canada.

This information is being provided here because the founder (in 1947) of the $100 million-a-year company passed away on March 1, 2007 at the age of 82. The obituary in the Globe & Mail, begins with this sentence: "Bruce Smith's story is classic Canadian bootstrappery." For more background on the company see: "Bruce Smith, Trucker and Businessman 1925-2007," by Ron Csillag, G&M, April 2, 2007, p.S9.

UPDATE
