Education Library Director and Staff Honour Outgoing Dean of Education
Already recognized internationally as one of Canada's leading experts in early reading, Dr. Julia O'Sullivan has now also been recognized locally as an outstanding dean by the director and staff of the Education Library. After O'Sullivan announced she was stepping down from her role as Dean of Education effective June 30, 2010, Director of the Education Library, Christena McKillop, and her fellow library staff members honoured O'Sullivan with a digital bookplate in her name during a farewell reception. The tribute gift was a thank you from the group to O'Sullivan for her commitment and contribution to Western during her three-year term.
McKillop describes the digital bookplate as, "fitting and appropriate recognition from the staff and libraries, as Dr. O'Sullivan has always been a library supporter, and an advocate for the importance of literacy."
"Dr. O'Sullivan was very pleased and surprised...Many guests said to [McKillop] that they couldn't think of a more fitting gift to give."
It is indeed most fitting because the donation becomes part of an unrestricted endowment fund, which helps provide students and researchers at the university with the resources they need to succeed, now and in the future - a cause O'Sullivan would undoubtedly dub worthy of support.
As O'Sullivan embarks on new endeavours as dean at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto, the tribute digital bookplate will celebrate, in perpetuity, her time at Western as a student, teacher, scholar and leader.
