University Librarian Honours Staff Who Make a Difference

April, 2010

Western Libraries Staff bookplateJoyce Garnett, University Librarian, believes it's the staff at Western Libraries who make a difference every single day: "I believe our staff make a tremendous difference in so many lives, on so many levels."

True to her belief, Garnett recently made a gift to Western Libraries to honour library staff's ongoing commitment to excellence. Her contribution supports the "Collections Culture" pillar - one of four priority projects for Western Libraries within the "Make a Difference" campaign - and will be used to digitize existing holdings to increase access to knowledge, a vital component in serving Western's local, regional and global communities.

Garnett's contribution has been recognized through a permanent Digital Bookplate in the library's online catalogue, which she has dedicated to all members of Western Libraries' staff.

When asked why she was moved to honour staff in this manner, Garnett explains: "I feel it is important to recognize the fact that our staff educate, inspire and motivate students and other patrons on a daily basis. From friendly interactions at the service desk to making library materials available in an organized and efficient manner, our staff are key to the quality service provided to Western's growing and varied user groups. The skills they pass along to students through classroom instruction and one-on-one research consultations are enduring skills, which serve to shape critical thinkers and inspire lifelong learners."

It is this dedication and impact that Garnett sought to highlight: "Our staff really care about the students and faculty they serve, as they strive to provide the best service and resources possible. They go above and beyond what is required of them to meet the needs of our users."

The Digital Bookplate Program directly supports donations made to Western Libraries' campaign priority projects. For more information on our campaign priorities, please visit the Libraries' "Be Extraordinary" campaign web page. To view the Digital Bookplate Homepage, please click here.
