The Map and Data Centre is pleased to notify users of two workshops offered by PhD students from the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Sciences.
|An Introduction to R|
|When||Thursday October 29, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm|
|Where||Weldon Instruction Room (Ground Floor, The D.B. Weldon Library)|
|What||R is a popular open source statistical package for data analytics and graphics that is widely used in both academia and industry. According to a recent survey, it is the most used statistical programming language and the 13th overall for all programming languages. It is available for free download from: http://cran.ca.r-project.org for use on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux (there's even a version on Android)
This course is a half day introduction to R which will be led by PhD Candidates in the Department of Statistical & Actuarial Sciences.

|A Crash Course in Introductory Inferential Statistics|
|When||Thursday October 29, 12:30 pm - 4:30 pm|
|Where||Teaching Support Centre Room 121 (Main Floor, The D.B. Weldon Library)|
|What||A patient speaker who understands how to teach will connect the core ideas of introductory inferential statistics into a session meant to be both useful and enjoyable. Statistical procedures discussed will include t tests, simple linear regression, one-way analyses of variance and chi-squared tests. Even if you need more advanced procedures in your research, this session will be useful as it will improve your understanding of the purpose of hypothesis testing and interpretation of p-values in general. Scientific reasoning abilities and comfort working with high-school level mathematical formulas would be assets.|
