What you need to know about EZProxy

What is EZProxy?

EZProxy allows users to sign in to a proxy server which acts on behalf of a computer being used in a remote location. The proxy server makes it possible for Western faculty, students and staff to access all of the available electronic resources, from any location.

It is necessary to sign in to the proxy server because some of the Western Libraries' electronic resources are restricted to Western faculty, students and staff use ONLY. The library system must sign a licensing agreement, which requires us to ensure that only members of the Western community use these resources. We only restrict access when a license agreement requires us to do so.

Who can use EZProxy?

Any member of the Western Community (faculty, student or staff) who connects to the internet through an Internet Service Provider (ISP) other than Western (ie. Sympatico, Rogers, etc.), OR who works from an off-campus location in a research institute, hospital or private office.

The proxy server is not necessary for members of the Western community who connect to the Internet through a computer located within the Western network or who dial into the Western modem pool. You are already assigned an IP address within the Western domain (129.100).

How do I access library resources from off-campus?

To connect to, and search, Western Libraries online resources from your home or another off-campus location, you must log into the proxy server with your Western personal computer account.

For best results, sign in using "Off-Campus Access" before beginning your database or catalogue search. You can also sign in any time while navigating the Western Libraries website. The "Off-Campus Access" login is always in the top left hand corner of each page, and once logged in, you can continue your search from the same page where you logged in.

How do I navigate in EZProxy?

Be sure to navigate the Western Libraries homepage by using the browser's forward and back arrows so that you remain on the proxy server at all times. Look in the address window for the word 'proxy.' if 'proxy' is in the address window you are logged on to the proxy server.

For convenience of access and to avoid multiple authentications, it is recommended that users either open a new tab to the EZProxy server in their browser or launch a separate session of the browser for EZProxy use.

EZProxy Button

What is the EZProxy button?

The EZProxy button (or bookmarklet) is a link you can add to your browser's bookmarks toolbar. You can click on the EZProxy button to start using the Western Libraries' EZProxy server wherever you might be on the web.

Try the EZProxy Link Generator to rewrite any existing bookmarks you have into EZProxy-style bookmarks. You can also use the link generator to convert journal or database URLs that you receive in e-mail messages, PDF files, or Word documents.

How do I install the EZProxy button?

Installing the Button in IE:

  • Right click on this link: WL EZProxy, and select "Add to Favorites". If you see a security alert that the "favorite may not be safe" click "yes" to continue.
  • In the "Add Favorites" window, click on the "Create in >>" button to display the list of favorites folders.
  • Click on the "Links" folder and press OK. The "Add Favorite" window will close and the button should appear in the links toolbar.
Installing the Button in Firefox:
  • Right click on this link: WL EZProxy, and select "Bookmark This Link", or click and drag the link to your "Bookmarks" toolbar.

Note: This is compatible with most web browsers and platforms as long as your bookmarks or favorites allow javascript. The links toolbar may not be visible in all setups and in most browsers, you can enable it in the View->Toolbars menu of your web browser. You can also put it in your bookmarks instead of the links toolbar.

How do I Use the EZProxy Button?

The EZProxy button will "reroute" your browser to load the current web page via the EZProxy server, which will normally give you access to journal articles that you have found using a database like PubMed or Google Scholar.

When a journal website tells you that you are not authorized to load a page, or asks you to log in, press the EZProxy button.

If you have already used EZProxy during this session, it will automatically reload the publisher's page. There are three different possibilities:

  1. It will load the article you want.
  2. You will see the same "unauthorized" page. Look on the page for a link to the article you want. It will probably work now.
  3. There's no link to the article you want on the page, or you see a different sort of error message. This usually means that the publisher's website is too complicated to be able to just reload the page.

If pressing the button didn't work, then press the "Back" button on your browser until you are back to the page before you got to the publisher's website (usually this will be a page of search results from Google or another database). Press the EZProxy button on this page and then click on the link for the article you want.
