Perkins + Will and the Project Oversight Team completed four stakeholder focus group consultation sessions. Each focus group was well attended with participants engaged in focused programmatic discussions, and creativity and vision exercises.
Faculty representatives from across campus, graduate students, Western Libraries staff, and key campus partners, including Research Western and Western Technology Services.
Participants described the kinds of spaces and expertise that could support their research, including:
- Digitization equipment and digital archival support
- Large-scale visualization tools for working with data
- Presentation and exhibit space for showcasing research
Managers from across Western Libraries who lead teams currently working in Weldon or that may move to Weldon.
Participants would value a working space that's clean, timeless, natural and bright, and includes a combination of focused, collaborative, and social spaces. They want some spaces to offer a sense of calm and tranquility, and others to inspire creativity and engagement.
Undergraduate and graduate students from across campus, Western Libraries staff, and key campus partners from Student Experience and the Centre for Teaching and Learning.
Participants envision a beautiful and inspiring space that can support multiple learning styles and knowledge sharing, and offer access to technology. They want an inclusive and enriching environment with spaces for:
- Individual and group learning
- Exhibitions and community events
- Practicing presentations
Graduate students from across campus and representatives from the Centre for Teaching and Learning.
Participants are looking for a variety of learning spaces ranging from focused, to collaborative and social. Their ideal graduate commons is inclusive, promotes wellness and offers space for workshops and presentations, as well as secure storage for project materials. Another key need is family-friendly spaces.
We launched a survey in December 2018 to ask users about their preferences for new Weldon Library space. We heard from over 1,200 people, who let us know natural light, comfy seating, large tables to spread out on, access to food and drink, and plenty of power outlets are all must-haves in any library renovation.
The infographic below provides some highlights from the survey, the results of which have confirmed much of the information we gathered through the Western Libraries Space Master Plan.
