At the Heart of it All: Developing Effective Learning Outcomes

Well-designed learning outcomes are key to the development of a cohesive course syllabus. When faced with a mountain of content, learning outcomes also help instructors to respond to the question, Help! There's too much to cover. How do I choose what to teach? In this workshop, participants will 1) explore the characteristics of, 2) write, and 3) receive feedback on learning outcomes for a course and a single lesson. This session is particularly important for individuals hoping to complete the Course Design Project in support of the Western Certificate in University Teaching and Learning. Please arrive at the session with a course in mind, whether it is one you have created or one you have experience with as a TA or student.

Inclusive Classrooms: Creating Safe Spaces for LGBTQ Students

Join us for a panel discussion to learn how to create inclusive classrooms for our LGBTQ students on campus. Wendy Pearson (Women's Studies), Frederick King (English), and Stephanie Kapusta (Philosophy) will share some best practices and strategies. Participants will also have an opportunity to ask questions of the panel members.

Professionalism: Networking with Success in Academia

Learning to network is a key component of attending conferences and preparing for the job search. Join us for a workshop session to discuss the unspoken rules of professionalism in academia. Participants will have an opportunity to explore several case studies and learn tips for appropriate behavior during the job talk and for socializing in an academic setting.
