Welcome and Introduction provided by Dr. Katherine McKenna, Faculty Teaching Fellow for Graduate Studies at the Teaching Support Centre. Our Keynote Speaker is Dr. Helene Cummins from Brescia University College. Her talk is titled, “Mentoring Female Graduate Students: Connecting for Success in the Academy and Beyond"

Dr. Helene Cummins is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Brescia University College. She is the recent recipient of the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA) Status of Women Award of Distinction for outstanding contribution to research and service to support and alleviate challenges for the female academic/librarian and make for betterment in their life's work. As Chair of OCUFA’s Status of Women Committee, she co-authored the report Echoes of the Past, Vision for the Future: Transforming social cultures and structures for Ontario’s women faculty and academic librarians which was based on the findings of a “listening tour” held at universities across Ontario.

Join us for an engaging panel discussion with women faculty from across Western. Panelists will share their own experiences and offer advice on mentoring and finding mentors while in graduate school. The panel includes:

Dr. Jessica Grahn, Department of Psychology, and The Brain and Mind Institute
Dr. Christine Sprengler, Department of Visual Arts
Dr. Ana Luisa Trejos, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

Resource Fair and Free Lunch

Consider visiting the Resource Fair in Room 121 over the lunch break. Representatives from services from across campus will be there to share information and answer your questions!
Please register for your free bag lunch (so we know how many to order). Lunch will be available for pickup to those participants who register in Room 120.

Informal Initiatives and Action Plan Proposals

This session will begin with a panel discussion of some of the informal initiatives already in place for women at Western. Panelists include:
Robyn Schwarz (History) Veromi Asiradam (Philosophy) and Ramina Adam (Neuroscience)

We will then transition to breakout group discussions on three themes:
1) Work/life balance
2) Imposter syndrome
3) Gendered expectations in academia
Melanie Stone (WSFR and SOGS Equity Committee Co-chair), Robyn Schwarz (History) and Sally Norris (Audiology and Hearing Science) will facilitate the discussion groups. Come prepared to share your ideas! As a wrap up, each group will share their recommendations for action.
